Bahamas Laws Online website re-launched
Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs the Hon. Allyson Maynard-Gibson described the re-launch of Bahamas Laws Online as a "red letter day" that offers new opportunities to take The Bahamas to another level and "celebrate" the rule of law and democracy.
 

The new website, laws.bahamas.gov.bs, replaces the previous website at which laws were current to 2009. The Ministry of Legal Affairs has since made the site current to December 31, 2014.

COB President signs OAS Cooperation Accord at VII Summit
of The Americas 
 The President of The College of The Bahamas Dr Rodney D. Smith has signed an Organization of American States (OAS) Cooperation Agreement that formalizes student scholarship and faculty teaching and research opportunities.

President Smith signed the agreement on Friday, April 10th, 2015 following the inaugural University Presidents Forum held under the auspices of the VII Summit of The Americas in Panama City, Panama.

Youth Ambassadors for Positive Living 2015 installed
Governor General Her Excellency Dame Marguerite Pindling congratulated some 50 high school students who successfully completed the peer education and leadership requirements to be installed as Youth Ambassadors for Positive Living 2015, April 9, in the Ballroom of Government House. Minister of Education, Science and Technology the Hon. Jerome Fitzgerald also congratulated the new ambassador positive role models.

Over 400 young Bahamians have been inducted as Young Ambassadors of the organization in areas of peer leadership, counselling, and mentoring - including going into the communities to speak to their peers on HIV/AIDS, drugs, child abuse and teenage pregnancy, steering them towards making good decisions.

Junior Achievers light it up blue
The achievers and advisors of WHYMSICAL, the 2014-15 Junior Achievement company counseled by KPMG, were proud to participate in R.E.A.C.H. Bahamas' World Autism Awareness Day events on Thursday, April 2, 2015. 

Achievers and advisors joined in the March from Pompey Square to Rawson Square and then attended the Light It Up Blue ceremony in Rawson Square.   During the Light It Up Blue ceremony members of WHYMSICAL presented a small token to the President of R.E.A.C.H. Bahamas to assist in their fight to raise awareness for autism.

Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Vernal Collie retires
The Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Legal Affairs honoured and celebrated the contributions of Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Mr. Vernal Collie in a Retirement Party on Saturday, April 11, at the Paul Farquharson Conference Centre, Police Headquarters. 
  

Mr. Collie retires after 46 continuous years of commendable service to the Government of The Bahamas first as an educator and then in the legal field as a Prosecutor in the Office of the Attorney General.

Humane Society Annual General Meeting next week!

Grand Bahama set for Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival Kick Off weekend
Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival (BJC) fever is in the air and all systems are go as Grand Bahama makes ready for the biggest non-stop cultural kickoff party the island has ever seen set for this weekend on Taino Beach.

The BJC committee met at Worker's House over the weekend with team leaders and their workers, vendors, volunteers, Junkanooers, fitness instructors,artists, DJs and local performers to finalize plans for the Taino Beach site which is being transformed into a Cultural Village.


 

Rotary Club of Freeport gets a taste of Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival
The Rotary Club of Freeport got a taste of Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival on Thursday, which served as a prelude to the Kickoff Weekend set for Grand Bahama on April 17th and 18th at Taino Beach.

Bahamas National Festival Commission Consultant Ginger Moxey, in her address at the Rotarians' weekly luncheon meeting at the Ruby Swiss Restaurant, spoke about the merits of the first ever Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival which was a created as a vehicle to market Junkanoo and Bahamian arts and culture, rebrand the country as a viable entertainment and cultural destination and create a profitable industry from which all Bahamians can benefit.

Mousetrap competition highlights future engineers
Recently the Minister for Grand Bahama, Dr. Michael Darville, officially opened the 18th annual SECME Mousetrap and Bottle Rocket Competition by firing the first bottle rocket to start the festivities. Soon thereafter, students from throughout Grand Bahama competed to see which budding engineers had built and designed the best mousetrap car or bottle rocket.

The competition was held at the Jack Hayward High School gymnasium, with Grand Bahama Shipyard (GBS) once again being the major sponsor of the competition along with annual organisers Bahamas Society of Engineers, the Ministry of Education and the Rotary Club of Lucaya.

Schools in Central Andros welcome the Governor General
The iconic Harbour Island landmark Romora Bay Resort & Marina has announced the appointment of Joseph Dargavage as operations manager. Mr. Dargavage is a former president of the Marina Operators of The Bahamas and served as chairman of the Berry Islands Tourism Advisory Board.

"We are very pleased to announce the appointment of Joe Dargavage, a man who fully understands how valuable and important the yachting business is in The Bahamas, especially to Family Islands like Harbour Island," said John Davidson, of Bonachella Investments, the Miami-based company which purchased the property in 2005 and added a 40-slip, eco-friendly marina with nesting areas and educational components.

Ministry of Tourism showcased 2015 'It's A Bahamian Ting' Concert at Arawak Cay 
 Thousands of Bahamians, young and old, joined The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism this weekend at the 2015 'It's a Bahamian Ting' Concert, held on Saturday, April 11th, at Arawak Cay from 7 PM until the wee hours.  

The live extravaganza featured all local performing artists and showcased free-to-the-public performances, as the Ministry begins the countdown to Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival Festival this coming Thursday.    

 

"This is a great event and it's always good to bring our people together to celebrate who we are and what we are, and to refresh ourselves.  We speak through our music, we speak through our culture, it's the one thing that brings us to other people, and it unifies us," said the Hon. Obie Wilchcombe, Minister of Tourism, Bahamas Ministry of Tourism.

Acclaimed Canadian jazz pianist, Steve Koven returns to Grand Bahama 
he Grand Bahama Performing Arts Society (GBPAS) will present world renowned Canadian jazz pianist, composer and educator Steve Koven in concert at the Grand Bahama Sailing Club on Friday, April 17th at 7:30pm. Steve will also conduct a Master Class at the same venue on Saturday, April 18th at 10:30 a.m. This is Steve's 3rd performance and Master Class in Grand Bahama and jazz fans are excited to welcome him back.

Aside from performing world-wide with his acclaimed Steve Koven Trio, Steve also performs solo piano concerts throughout North America, Europe and the Caribbean. Dozens of Steve's compositions have been licensed for national and international film and television productions.

The tagline for this movie: Worlds Collide. When an alien race comes to inhabit an inhabited planet one of their own finds himself on the run. He forms an unlikely friendship with one of the indigenous creatures of the planet on a quest to reconnect with her family. As they work together to help each other to achieve their separate goals she will change is world has he changes her planet.

Oh is Boov who is trying to understand why he does not have more friends in spite of his friendly nature, but when he makes a mistake that makes him a fugitive from his people he must find a way to hide from them on the new planet they have just invaded. Tip is a young girl who has just moved to the United States from Barbados and has lost her mother during the Boov's relocation of all humans to Australia so she must now set out with her pet cat Pig to find her. Captain Smeck is the leader of the Boov who has chosen Earth as their new place of residence as they hide from The Gorgs, but little does he know that his own incompetence may doom his people as they follow his example in how to interact with one another. Lucy is Tip's mom and she is trying her best to find her daughter on the relocation continent among the rest of the humans placed there.

Extreme Kayak Fishing Tournament Set for Next Week!
March 16, 2015... The Extreme Kayak Fishing Tournament series will be heading to The Bahamas for its second annual Battle in The Bahamas. This two-day kayak fishing tournament, scheduled to take place April 23rd-26th, 2015 will lure in anglers and their families from all over the world. Grand Bahama Island will play host to this group of skilled and courageous fishermen as they battle each other and Mother Nature for a chance to win over $30,000.00 USD in cash and prizes with a 1st place prize of $10,000.00 USD.

The tournament will help raise money for Grand Bahama Children's Home and will offer free entertainment, food, drinks and lots of fun for all the land-loving family members and friends. But let's face it, they're in The Bahamas and finding something to do won't be an issue.

T-Connection and Bahamian All-Stars share one stage for Kickoff Weekend
 

The stage is set for an explosive Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival (BJC) Kickoff weekend in Grand Bahama when the legendary T-Connection and a Bahamian all-star lineup, including Jay Mitchell, pull out all the stops at the first ever non-stop cultural party on April 17-18.

Thousands will flock to Taino Beach, which is being transformed into a Cultural Village, to take part in the all-day festivities beginning at 6:00 p.m. Friday and local entertainers are hyped and ready for an electrifying showdown.   

 

Ginger Moxey, organizer of the BJC Kickoff Weekend and Bahamas National Festival Commission Consultant, stressed that there is something for everyone to enjoy throughout the entire weekend at the Cultural Village.   

 

"Our events cater to the entire community and we're so excited about it. We are so delighted to have the many entertainers, artists, DJs, other performers, Junkanooers and artisans who have come onboard," said Moxey.   

 

"We will have live Bahamian music from day one when the party starts and the 17 Bahamian artists who made it to the semifinals in the song competition of the Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival CD compilation will perform their original songs on stage over the two days."    

 

Grand Bahama's Terrell Tynes-Wilson and Georgina Ward-Rigby are among the semi-finalists.
