BNT team gets in-depth lesson on coral reef protection
The Bahamas National Trust (BNT), the GEF Full Size Project, the Atlantis Blue Project and The Nature Conservancy all teamed up last week to train twenty-three team members in the coral reef assessment tool known as Atlantic and Gulf Rapid Reef Assessment (AGRRA).  The week-long training session was supported by the Atlantis Blue Project which is committed to supporting environmental organisations and promoting marine conservation.

"Over the past five years, we have trained around 25 Bahamians in the Atlantic and Gulf Rapid Reef Assessment Protocol," said Dr. Craig Dahlgren, Atlantis Blue Project instructor.  "We have worked with the Bahamas National Trust and other NGO's to use this international standard for assessing the health of coral reefs for the purpose of evaluating potential marine protected area sites, and assessing overall reef health."

With heartfelt thanks to Carol Grant of Peddlers, the HSGB now has a plan ready to launch, to help us keep our doors open and continue serving the Grand Bahama community.  Carol contacted us after seeing the coverage of our press conference. We have been overwhelmed and gratified by the outpouring of support from our regular supporters, and some new ones, too; since our press conference.

We have been able to pay down our debt by approximately 35% and this is the first month in a long time that we have not been scrapping or borrowing to make our last payroll of the month. We are especially gratified by the number of new Pet Sponsors we have gained.  We went from a mere ten dogs being sponsored to over 80, plus a few cats!

Guana Cay reefs suffering extensive damage
The once pristine reef system surrounding the tiny island of Guana Cay in the Abacos has suffered extensive damage since construction of the controversial Baker's Bay development, environmentalists say. The Save Guana Cay Reef Association (SGCRA), which mounted a groundbreaking five-year legal campaign in opposition to the project, warned of serious implications for the reef - recognized as one of the best dive sites in the world - as well as for the rest of the previously unspoiled island. It is now clear that their predictions have come true.

"There has been environmental desecration out here," said leading environmental advocate Fred Smith, QC. "They burned the entire forest, they tore down the mangroves, they dug it all up. "They've got a golf course, and the chemicals are seeping into the reefs that are there. It is environmental rape and pillage."

At the Movies: 'Kingsman: The Secret Service'

This movie has no tagline. A clandestine spy organization recruits an unrefined, but promising street kid into its ultra-competitive training program to replace one of their fallen members. As this takes place the active agents of the organization must deal with a rash of kidnappings around the world which may be the alarming first stage in a plan for a global threat from the twisted mind of a powerful tech mogul.

Harry Hart is codenamed Galahad of the secret service agency known as Kingsman which is in need of a new recruit after one of their agents loses his life in the line of duty, but his candidate may not be the right fit for the exclusive organization despite his belief in him having exactly what it takes to succeed. Gary Unwin is known as Eggsy to his friends and must deal with his mother's abusive boyfriend after the death of his biological father, but good fortune comes his way when he is recruited into the training program to become an agent in Kingsman due to his untapped potential for espionage like his dad.

Munich Olympics terror survivor to share his story in Nassau

Shots shattered the air, hostages were taken, the world turned upside down in an instant that forever taught people everywhere that terror knew no rules, not even the Olympics was safe from hate.

But for one man, Dan Alon, an athlete who had dreams of returning with medals in his sport of fencing and returned with coffins of his teammates instead, the 1972 Munich Massacre as it came to be called was not the end, but the beginning of a journey.

On March 10, that journey will take him to Nassau where Alon will share his story and the lessons learned during a presentation open and free to the public at the Melia Nassau Beach Resort at 6 pm.

The event is organized by the Nassau Jewish Community as part of a community outreach effort. Three years ago, the group hosted a Schindler's List survivor, drawing nearly 700 people to hear the story of personal strength in the face of atrocity. That program was also offered without charge.

"In each of these cases, the survivor from Auschwitz who worked in Schindler's factory and with Dan Alon, the lesson they want to share is that despite what others try to do to you, you have the inner strength to overcome," said Rabbi Sholom Bluming. "Once you reach that place of inner peace, you can share them and with the constant threat of terror that we face now with terrorist attacks in Paris, Denmark and other places part of everyday news, finding ways to join together to combat evil are more important than ever. Together through peace and unity we will help fight terrorism and together all the flags of the world will wave in peace."
