Prime Minister The Rt. Hon. Perry G Christie - Mid Year 2014-2015 Budget Statement

I stand before you today with enormous confidence in our nation's economic future! Things are looking good! We are on the move!

Here in New Providence, over there on Paradise Island, up in Grand Bahama, and all across our archipelago, from Mayaguana in the south to Bimini in the north, the engines of the national economic machine are being primed to propel us forward to a new era of economic prosperity. I am absolutely and unshakably convinced of that!

While other nations in the region are for the most part experiencing gloom and predicting doom we, here in The Bahamas, in this beloved land of ours, have weathered the storm. We made the tough decisions when we had to, tightened our belts when we had to, and took our medicine when we had to.

Kingdor National Parkinson Foundation working to beat Parkinson's Disease
The Kingdor National Parkinson Foundation was instituted in The Bahamas on April 20th 2000 in memory of Rev. Dr. K. S. Darling, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and his wife Dorothy, his primary caregiver. The name Kingdor is a coinage of Reverend Doctor Darling's Christian name "King" and "Dor" as Mrs. Darling's affectionate pet name for Dorothy. The purpose for the organization is to ensure that Parkinsonians, their relatives and caregivers enjoy lives of dignity and self-worth

Kingdor is an Affiliated Chapter of the National Parkinson Foundation in the United States, which is the largest Parkinson's organization in the United States and indeed worldwide.  Hence, we are proud that there are forty-three Centers of Excellence globally whereby research is tirelessly being conducted in an attempt to find a cure for this vexing disease.

Minister Wilchcombe officially opens Lukka Kairi
Minister of Tourism Obie Wilchcombe said recently that he's looking forward to new life coming to downtown Nassau this year through new restaurants and other forms of nightlife.  The minister said at much at the opening of Bay Street's newest waterfront restaurant Lukka Kairi.

Lukka Kairi, which is owned by Arturo Salas, is located on Oceanfront Prince George Wharf - a few steps down from Pompey Square. The restaurant offers fresh, Bahamian dishes like conch fritters, lobster rolls, tamarind ribs, macaroni and cheese and a unique spin on tasty desserts like guava duff. Bahamian culture exudes in Lukka Kairi as Bahamians artists painted all of the art décor on the walls. The paintings tell a story of Bahamian history from the Lucayans to pirates to the cultural expression of Junkanoo.

Billie Talks Business: Do you have a work spouse?

When I first heard the phrase "work spouse" about ten years ago, at first I thought it referred to an actual married couple that just happened to be working together. Then I realized that the persons who were using the phrase weren't married at all to each other, which led me to think that they must have an intimate/romantic relationship. Again I thought this couldn't possibly be the case as the phrase was being used quite openly. Having a torrid elicit affair with a fellow coworker is certainly not something any right-minded individual would flaunt. Yet colleagues were referring to other colleagues as their work spouses. Most often women would use the phrase "work husband." It led me to ask a few more questions about this particular type of relationship.

Clearly I've been behind the eight ball for quite some time because work spouse relationships are very commonly known and actual research has been conducted on these unique yet very special relationships. And what exactly is a work spouse?

The work of three emerging wood artists, Robin Hardy, David McGorrin, and Jeremy Delancy, will be highlighted at their Doongalik Studios' Exhibition Opening on Sunday, February 22nd, 2015 from 3-6pm.  All three artists specialize in woodturning and between them have over 40 years of experience in the art. The artists have decided to bring together their respective talents into one show entitled, "From Within".  The name alludes not only to the beauty that lies within a tree but also the talent, skills and vision that is within each artist.

The primary purpose of the show is to expose the audience to the idea that wood is an excellent artistic medium with multiple properties far beyond what its normal function.  Another purpose is to pay homage to the ancient craft of woodturning which was invented by the ancient Egyptians and has grown far beyond its humble beginnings.

Tom Purvis reports: Freeport flourish past the Cuckoos
On Saturday, 6th February, the Freeport Rugby team had a Heineken Cup Match against the Nassau Cuckoos, the defending Bahamas Cup Champions. The Freeport fans knew that was going to be a very exciting game with many unforgettable moments and they were not disappointed.

Although the weather was not typical (it was extremely chilly with tempetures in the mid sixties) the Freeport team was very well represented with the club packed with fans hoping that their Freeport boys could win against such a quality team. The Freeport team started off with a fast and furious attitude which was evident in the 22nd minute when, after an exchange of play, Freeport made an attack on the right flank with the ball being passed to their centre Gio Rolle who made a strong run down the touchline.

Bahamas National Feeding Network donates $40,000 to feed the hungry

In its continuing fight against hunger, the Bahamas National Feeding Network (BNFN) today donated $40,000 in vouchers enabling those who feed the hungry to serve as many as 60,000 hot meals.

"In a land of sunshine, there is another darker, sadder world," said Philip Smith, BNFN executive director. "These are people who have either lost their jobs or lost their way, grown too old to work or too neglected to be noticed. They face hunger on a daily basis. Fortunately, for them, there are all of you who are here today - you, who provide hot meals and comfort, operate soup kitchens and church feeding centres. You are the real heroes in the war against hunger and we are pleased to partner with you to make what you do even more meaningful.''

It was the second time in months that the newly established network, the brainchild of H.E. Frank Crothers, and chaired by Felix Stubbs, donated retail food store vouchers to churches and other feeding organisations. In November, the network distributed $30,000 in vouchers.

The two combined donations are estimated to provide more than 100,000 meals with needs still greater than the network can meet.

During the November presentation Dianne Bingham, representing Fox Hill's Mosseff House, which her family started and continues to support, shared what she called the "tragic stark reality."
