Dear Reader,

Tomorrow begins a new year for us all. Of course, for The Bahamas we will 'welcome' Value Added Tax (VAT) to our shores for the first time. Having not paid this type of tax before, this will be a shock to many of us, especially those who felt it would never happen. There are still many unanswered questions, like anything new. Though no one wants to pay this type of tax, we must be realistic that our country cannot survive or borrow any more than we already do! But, we must also demand accountability from our government on all its expenditures and that these new taxes will be evenly, consistently and fairly applied to all.

There has also been a dramatic end to the year over immigration round-ups and whether the treatment of them is humane or not, a pilot strike at Bahamasair at Christmas and the unexplained loans at Bank of The Bahamas. These topics will obviously be in the forefront of our news for 2015. There are many different views on all of these subjects and, if you are active in social media, you will have no doubt been involved or seen some of the varied opinions. Some are quite heated. But, one thing we can be sure of is people's opinions are out there, they are speaking to each other, other islands and other countries.

Politically it's been a busy year for the Christie Government, the opposition leadership challenge and the rise of the DNA party.

For BahamaIslandsInfo.com it has also been a steady year of growth, as we head into 2015 we will have published more than 20,000 stories on our website and have seen subscriptions continue to rise as people demand a reliable, factual and consistent source for news and information. We must thank all our advertisers who make our website, weekly newsletter and mailouts all possible. And, of course, our hardworking team behind the scenes that help keep everything working!

As we welcome 2015, we wish you all a very Happy New Year and thank you for sharing our stories, sending us your letters, following us on social media and sending us your news. May the new year bring much prosperity to our beautiful chain of islands and to our people. Lastly, may we safely enter into the new year and pray that crime is not the lead story for 2015.

Happy New Year Bahamas!

Deputy Prime Minister speaks on Bahamasair pilots' recent action
The recent unprovoked and unwarranted industrial action taken by the Pilots of the national flag carrier Bahamasair is of great concern to the government of the Bahamas in that the cost and inconvenience to the traveling public calls for immediate action to be taken to avoid further occurrences. I am deeply troubled that Pilots took this unlawful and unwarranted industrial action less than six hours after being informed that the Minister of Labour would take their proposal to Cabinet the following day - nothing was refused, nothing was denied. The fact that they took this action anyway - without even filing a trade dispute clearly indicates it was always their intent to disrupt the airline's ability to operate.

Over the past two years the government has given considerable effort to securing a strategic partner for Bahamasair, but this gross act of corporate sabotage brings cause for acceleration of the government's efforts to relieve the Bahamian taxpayer of this heavy financial burden. Moreover, irresponsible and selfish acts of this nature do not provide the shareholder with an incentive to pursue any form of service or route expansion.

Immigration accused of savagely battering whistleblower by Fred Smith/GBHRA
Statement by Fred Smith, QC
President, GBHRA

For the second time since the launch of the government's draconian and illegal immigration enforcement policy on November 1, Dahene Nonord a 19-year-old young lady, born in The Bahamas, of Haitian parentage, has been unlawfully seized in the street and battered by immigration officers, this time, it appears, severely.

Dahene is my client and closely associated with the GBHRA. Eye witnesses tell us that while arguing with officers over their totally unwarranted attempts to apprehend her for the second time, she was assaulted by a group of officers. Try though we might to ascertain the extent of her injuries, up to the time of writing this statement, no information has been forthcoming form the authorities. The GBHRA is extremely concerned about her wellbeing.

Immigration responds to allegations made by Fred Smith/GBHRA
The Department of Immigration takes note of allegations being made in social media purportedly by Fred Smith QC of an alleged assault on  someone he describes as a client and a member of the Grand Bahama Human Rights Association (GBHRA).

The Department will make no comment on these allegations or any of its ongoing criminal investigations, save that the public should take whatever Mr. Smith says with "grains of salt." He is well known for alarmist and inflammatory rhetoric which does not often approximate with the facts. At the end of the day the Department will provide the public with all of the facts regarding anyone in the custody of the Department.

We again say that the Department of Immigration has not been involved in or sanctioned the inhumane treatment of anyone within its care or control.

Kiwanis and Urban Renewal team up to spread holiday cheer
As the healing process continues on the first anniversary of the shooting tragedy in Fox Hill that claimed the lives of four of that community's finest sons and daughters, the Kiwanis Club of East Nassau in conjunction with the Fox Hill Urban Renewal Project Office teamed up to spread a little holiday cheer in the form of a Christmas parade and family fun day. The fun day was held on the sight of the shooting tragedy on Saturday, 27th December 2014.

Filling in for the area MP Fred Mitchell who was out of the country on official business was the Vice President of the Senate, Hon. Joseph Curry who paid tribute to the victims and brought a message of continued healing. "As we reflect on the four (4) members of this community who lost their lives in that tragic and regrettable event a year ago today at this very spot, let us remember and pray for their families...they will always have a special place in our hearts and memories. The message which I wish to leave with you is that the healing must continue. This event is one of the ways in achieving this."

Bahamas scores marketing dollars from Bahamas Bowl
After hosting a successful inaugural Popeyes Bahamas Bowl at the Thomas A. Robinson Stadium in New Providence, The Bahamas has scored over $9.6 million in marketing value. The game on Christmas Eve was attended by thousands as it was being broadcasted live on ESPN. That broadcast had a potential reach of 110 million viewers. According to the latest media report prepared by officials, internet reach alone was over 1.9 million people.

The game itself was an exciting watch as the Conference USA's Western Kentucky University (WKU) Hilltoppers squared off against the Mid- American Conference's Central Michigan University Chippwas. In fact, many news sites have described the game as "one of the most exciting college football games in history." However, it was the Hilltoppers that was victorious over the Chippwas 49-48.

Rotary Club of GB Sunrise hosts a gathering of true Christmas spirit
The Big Brother / Big Sister program of youth mentorship for the teens of Columbus House for Girls  and Boys, spearheaded by Rotary Club of GB Sunrise President, James Sarles, held a touching holiday gathering and concert recently at the "Home Away from Home" Old-Aged Home on Grand Bahama. As a Christmas treat for the elderly residents, the children put on a holiday concert which was well received by the young at heart. The children enjoyed performing for the senior residents and they did an excellent job. The teens also brought gifts for each elderly resident and spent time talking with them, feeding them holiday party fare, and spreading good cheer.

As part of the Columbus House teens' weekly group outings, ju jitsu classes, and life-skill development activities, the teens have been taking guitar and music classes with master guitar teacher, Steve Persaud, every Saturday morning with the assistance of members of The Rotary Club of GB Sunrise. Their teens' musical concert enchanted one and all, as did the touching time the youth spent making connections that expands the family of the heart.

Garden of the Groves concludes International Migratory Bird events of 2014
This is the sixth year since the restoration of the Garden that International Migratory Bird events have been celebrated by Garden of the Groves. This year's theme was "Why Birds Matter" and Erika Gates, coordinator of the events, explained that the message she and her team was getting across in all activities was that birds make life better in so many ways. She went on to say that "Birds are providers of invaluable ecosystem services, such as insect control, seed dispersal, pollination. Birdwatching and Bird Photography helps generate millions of dollars into international economies. Also, birds bring solace to our complicated world!"

For five consecutive Saturdays in November the annual Basic Birding Class was conducted. This year 13 novice birders were graduated, having enjoyed classroom work, fieldtrips and becoming passionate about birds and their habitat. Upon completion of the course, certificates were presented by representatives of the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, sponsor of the class.

Grand Bahamian SWIFT swimmer breaks Bahamas swimming record in 50 meter butterfly
SWIFT swimmer Katelyn Cabral finished the year with a record-breaking swim at the Bahamas Swimming Federation's final meet of 2014 held this past Saturday at the Betty Kelly-Kenning National Swim Complex in New Providence.  Katelyn captured the Bahamas Record for the 50 meter butterfly which she swam in a time of 33.62 seconds. The previous record was 34.52 set in 2006 by Berchadette Moss.

This phenomenal swim also gives Katelyn her first CARFITA qualifying time as she advances to the 11-12 year old age group with hopes of making the Bahamas National Team. CARIFTA Swimming will be held in Barbados in April 2015. Ten SWIFT swimmers from Grand Bahama have already made qualifying times for CARIFTA 2015. Joining Katelyn as CARIFTA hopefuls are Joanna Evans, Jasmine Gibson, Arielle Adderley, Arleigha Hall, Tenniya Martin, Teshe Rolle, Darren Laing, Shimon Lopez and Joshua Rigby.

Deputy PM makes presentation of keys to triplex in West End
"The island of Grand Bahama is very special to me.  It is the place from which I practiced law for many years.  It is a place where I cultivated many bonds - professional and personal.  I am, therefore, always happy to come back to celebrate. I am especially happy to participate in this celebration because today, everywhere we go, we cannot help but notice that the world is busy...busy preparing for Christmas, busy getting things done before the end of the year, busy ensuring that they do not carry unnecessary burdens of one year into another.

Meanwhile, Urban Renewal has been touching people, busy building communities, and changing lives - this time, in truth, a West End Move. This Move is the product of innovation.  It is an innovation that was ignited by a need that could not be settled by bureaucratic ideologies.  Thinking outside the proverbial box is the essence of this West End Move.
Coming into the public sector with a private sector perspective has been the most difficult thing for me to overcome.  I hold the firm view that bureaucracy destroys initiative.

242 Colour Run livens up the streets of Hope Town
The quaint settlement of Hope Town was inundated with colourful runners and walkers on a fittingly beautiful Sunday morning. On December 28th, one-hundred and eleven adults and kids tossed colour into the air and ran a 5km road race, starting and finishing at Firefly Sunset Resort. The morning started off early with Albury's Ferry providing a direct ferry from Marsh Harbour to Firefly.

Registrations continued last minute, as those who were in town for the holidays signed up to participate. Participants gathered their reusable race packets, which included a packet of colour, 242 Colour Run sunglasses, 242 and Rotary temporary tattoos, bumper stickers, a race shirt and bib, and samples such as Jergens lotion, Ovaltine biscuits and Pinol laundry detergent. A few minutes before the 8:00am race start, the racers, volunteers, and spectators gathered for the much anticipated "colour toss". Packets of multiple colours were tossed in the air and on each other, livening up the morning.

Environment Minister clarifies presence of passing oil rig
The government of The Bahamas notes the image of a floating oil rig that appeared on social media and in the dailies allegedly spotted off the northern shores of North Abaco and the associated commentary.

It is important to note the given the strategic location of our chain of islands and the vast area of ocean that it covers, thousands of merchant ships, oil tankers and pleasure crafts pass through Bahamian waters annually.

The fact is that the Bahamas government has not contracted, approved or commissioned oil drilling operations within the territorial waters on The Bahamas. This is regarded by the government as another routine passage of a sea going vessel through Bahamian waters.

GBHRA: Mitchell must explain image of people caged like animals
Since the launch of the government's illegal and draconian immigration crackdown on November 1, Immigration Minister Fred Mitchell has repeatedly insisted that his officers do not treat people like "cattle". In light of the recently-surfaced image showing suspected illegal immigrants penned in a mobile enclosure more suited to the transportation of livestock than human beings, the Grand Bahama Human Rights Association (GBHRA) demands that he give a satisfactory explanation of the behavior of public servants under his charge.

Responding to the many cases of physical battery, wrongful detention and unlawful tactics which have arisen over the last two months, not to mention the recent rape allegation against a senior Immigration official, Mitchell's stance has been that the Bahamas government does not condone the abuse of detainees. This is a calculated and cynical dodge. The fact is, as minister he is responsible for the Department of Immigration, its employees and their actions.

Department of Immigration responds to 'photo disinformation on the web'
The Department of Immigration has taken note of a photo of migrants being held at Exuma that was circulated on social media sites on 26th and 27th December. The construction being given to this photo by those who are seeking to sabotage the policy of the Department is that somehow the migrants were being mistreated and being held in inhumane conditions. That is a false and malicious construction of events. The photo and comments appear designed to defame the Department.

The people in the photo were sitting on the back of a flatbed transport or trailer with an open end at the back of the trailer secured by a removable metal tailgate. The trailer was used to ferry the individuals from where they landed in Exuma to the holding facility the E C McKenzie auditorium in Ramsay, Exuma. The migrants were held at that auditorium overnight until they were transported by the Royal Bahamas Defence Force to Nassau. The journey from the landing point in Exuma would normally take thirty to forty minutes. At no time was any person under the care or supervision of the Department of Immigration kept in inhumane conditions.

Delays mar Boxing Day Junkanoo parade
Delays marred the Boxing Day Junkanoo experience for many spectators, prompting officials to pledge to seek ways of improving the pace of the parade in future. While the parade began on time around midnight Friday, a near one hour delay by the Music Makers group disrupted proceedings. The group was expected to be the second on Bay Street, but was replaced by One Family, who took the second category A spot, but did not start performing until their original time slot around 3.30am. Some Music Makers participants claimed that police did not allow their members through the starting gate, causing them not to get their lead pieces to the gate on time. Others said the group's truck suffered a major delay on its way to Bay Street. The group was eventually disqualified for not having enough lead pieces.

In addition, the Valley Boys struggled to move one of its taller costumes out of the road after parts became tangled in a rope tied to electrical wires on Shirley Street. It took participants about two hours to move it, according to Junkanoo Parade Management Chairman Douglas Hanna. Meanwhile, spectators on Shirley Street waited hours before the first major group appeared, with the Valley Boys arriving around 3am. The second major group, One Family, arrived in the area around 7.30am.

GBEMAA hopes to standardize rates for entertainers
The GBEMAA is in the process of standardizing rates for its memberships services. To this end we have created a rates suggestion form for our industry partners, members and vendors to consider.  The GBEMAA was founded in 1997 to address the rights and concerns of the Grand Bahamian entertainer.

We would like your assistance and input and would be honoured if you would fill this form out, pass it on to persons that you know that use arts and entertainment services, ask them to fill it out and direct replies to grandbahamaemaa@gmail.com and finally, distribute for public consumption. Any assistance or input would be greatly appreciated as the GBEMAA seeks to prepare our membership to offer better and more professional arts and entertainment services to the general public, our guests and locals alike.

At the Movies: Penguins of Madagascar

The tagline for this movie: The Movie Event That Will Blow Their Cover. Discover the secret origin for the elitist of the elite covert birds in the global espionage biz. As they join forces with a chic undercover organization to put an end to a villainous animal with a link to their past. Not everyone will make it out unscathed as the master plan of this new villain unfolds on an unsuspecting public.

I thought this was a big screen version of The Penguins of Madagascar television series, but the THE makes all the difference as Penguins of Madagascar is a spin off of the Madagascar movie series and in a different continuity than the tv series. I liked this movie more than I was expecting to, but I was a little disappointed that it was set apart from the tv series since I would have loved to see some of those characters on the big screen.

Letter: Things I just don't get...
Things I just don't get...

How is it, when the Prime Minister doesn't want to make a decision, he holds a "waste our time voting session" aka a referendum.... then still goes ahead and does what he ever wanted to do in the first place... And this is called democracy? No its communism...

How is it, that information about how the government spends, operates and uses funds is not available to public? In fact a lot of vital information about the operation of this country is not available to the public. Keeping people ignorant, in chains, shackled... Mental slavery.

How is it that the government would rather pay foreigners an arm, leg, kidneys and lungs plus a heart....but would rather pay an educated Bahamian with a brain, scraps from the master's dog's table. So young Bahamians leave, go off to college, excel and come home to be told they are over qualified, underpaid or no jobs are available. They stay away in foreign countries and better those countries. Then the people of the Bahamas say we have "Brain drain".

A Christmas cat miracle
By Tip Burrows/Humane Society of Grand Bahama

Many of you may have seen the HSGB holiday video in the past week. Turns out some of you have seen it more than once; in our desire to make sure all our supporters and friends saw it, we inadvertently emailed it to some people twice.  Sometimes mistakes can turn into twists of fate that simply cannot be explained.

Paula Farrington of Freeport is one of the people who received the video email more than once.  She wrote to us Christmas Eve morning: "Thank you for this wonderful video card. In the video is a picture of a cat that I've been looking for ...

She attached a screen shot of the cat we named Cow, from our holiday video, and also a photo of him taken on her patio many months ago.

We were so excited that one of our favorite kitties might actually have a home, and in time for Christmas, no less!  We wasted no time in ascertaining it was indeed the cat Paula had named Big Boy aka Domino.

This special kitty has now been reunited with Paula and her family, and we all could not be happier!
