Dr. Julius Garvey urges a repair of 'the breach' in reparatory justice lecture
When Pan-Africanist Dr. Julius Garvey speaks about the dislocation of African people, the breach they have endured and the African diaspora, people listen.  It was no different on Friday night, when Dr. Garvey, the son of Negro rights activist Marcus Mosiah Garvey - the founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association - gave a lecture at The College of The Bahamas' Performing Arts Centre that traced the history of European imperialism, chattel slavery, colonialism and its impact on African people.

The audience was riveted to Dr. Garvey's message, given in an address entitled "To Repair the Breach" in which he provided perspective on the cause for reparatory justice within the context of the historical enslavement and genocide of Africans.

National Feeding Network donates $30,000 to 30 feeding centres
Just under one year after it announced an ambitious goal to reach the day when no Bahamian goes to bed hungry and to assist all those who feed the needy, the Bahamas National Feeding Network made good on its promise, donating $30,000 in food vouchers to 30 organisations during a touching ceremony at a luncheon paid for by an anonymous donor.

"This is such a proud moment, but it is just a taste of things to come," said Frank Crothers, a director. "Those of us who are blessed are also charged with reaching out to those who have less and need more. Today, we are surrounded by people who do that every day - they reach out to feed the hungry, clothe the poor, provide shelter for the homeless. And now, through the Bahamas National Feeding Network, we are able to lessen their burden by providing food vouchers they may redeem at various locations."

BNT looking for community support for GB park expansion
Recently the Bahamas National Trust (BNT) President, Executive Director and Grand Bahama Parks Manager met with the Minister for Grand Bahama, Hutchinson Executives and Grand Bahama Port Authority representatives to review the proposed new and extended parks for the island.  The two new proposed parks for East Grand Bahama and the Northshore-Gap, as well as the extended Lucayan and Peterson's Cay areas are all featured on TV ads to be released in November.  Using first-time drone video footage, the ads were created to solicit feedback from the public on the proposed areas.

"The government has been very keen to support our request for more parks but have been very clear that they want public consultation and feedback," said Lakeshia Anderson, BNT GB Parks Manager. "We are asking for the public to review our ads, then go to the website to view the proposed areas, and sign the petition if they support them."

Freeport licencees weigh in on GBPA VAT training
Recent VAT Training for Licencees hosted by The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited (GBPA) and its Invest Grand Bahama Small Business Bureau (IGBSBB) gave clear indication that, while a 2015 implementation date for VAT is forecasted, most businesses may not be ready. Moreover, feedback from participating GBPA Licencees revealed, that as much information as possible regarding VAT is not only needed, but appreciated.

While attendees of the 4-day, sector based event applauded GBPA for the initiative, there was no shortage of tough questions by industry professionals for GBPA executives and presenters. A post event survey conducted by the 'Port' gave high marks for the event and spoke well of presenters, Keith Worrell, of the Grand Bahama VAT Unit as well as Dario Roberts of Bahabeach Web/IT Development, noting their keen ability to explain the cumbersome topic into a more comprehensible version.

Volunteer brings pet care presentation to schools
We're thrilled this week to welcome back supporter Elaine Charter to Freeport.  Elaine is from Ottawa, Canada and has done some amazing things to help our animals.  Including hosting a fundraiser in September (in Ottawa!) that raised over $1350 for the HSGB!  Elaine is a talented artist with a huge heart for animals.  She put together a slideshow presentation perfect for young children on responsible animal care and the difference between cold and hot climates in terms of what pets require.

On Tuesday, she accompanied our Education Chairperson, Doreen Jamieson, to Walter Parker Primary School and helped present our message to over 100 first graders.  Elaine absolutely exemplifies the premise that one person CAN make a difference.  We are so grateful for her ongoing support and concern for our homeless, abandoned, neglected and abused animals. We hope that more people will follow her lead, and get involved!

Good Touch - Bad Touch: The impact of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) on labor and birth

Intimate partner violence (IPV) exists when, in an close relationship, the offender's behavior causes physical, mental, sexual, emotional or social isolation or abuse to the victim. Acts of IPV include physical abuse (spitting, kicking, pushing, pinching, slapping, or strangulation), mental or emotional abuse (coercion, threats, stalking), sexual abuse (forced sexual intercourse or sexual acts without the consent of the victim), social abuse (isolating and/or limiting someone's contact with friends or family), and economic abuse (harassment at work, controlling finances, limiting place employment or sabotaging work performance, seizing income, and/or refusing to share income).

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that one in four women worldwide may experience IPV with one-third of adolescent girls reporting that their first sexual encounter was coerced. IPV and non-partner sexual violence lifetime prevalence rates range between 10% and 59%, the average being 35%.

Voice of the entertainer: GBEMAA to re-launch
Immediate past president Joe Fox resigns, now president of the GBEMAA Nat Cambridge calls meeting on November 17.

But for a few brave outspoken individuals, the voice of the entertainer in Grand Bahama has been largely silent. In a time when the government of the Bahamas has a stated position of supporting and encouraging the re-development of our island and primarily through tourism initiatives we have yet to see the tangible results of any initiatives. Their effects have not reached the pockets and the quality of lives of the local entertainers.

Among us there are many and varied individuals. Persons engaged in crafts and fields of labor from commercial and industrial workers to office and managerial positions. We have turned to alternative means of employment. Not by choice bu out of a necessity to feed our families. Now we exist in a reality that sees us doing what we must because what we should is not supported or facilitated.

Proud of my party
Dear Editor,

There have been a lot of letters and articles about who should lead the Free National Movement in 2015 and beyond. Some of them are nice and supportive and some are tinged with a bit if dirt-throwing, but despite all that, the beauty of this upcoming leadership campaign is that a woman is running! And whether she wins or not I am so proud that my party is the first to have a woman do this.

In today's Bahamas women are still classed as second-class citizens in legal terms as we do not have equal rights for our children or husbands. It's a sad fact that successive governments have not changed this as of yet.  But, despite this and the negative comments made by some men and women when equality for women is brought up, I have not seen anyone say that Loretta Butler- Turner SHOULD NOT RUN BECAUSE SHE IS A WOMAN.  Of this I am very proud!
