PM: Bahamas is economic majority owner of BTC
The Bahamas is once again the majority owner of the Bahamas Telecommunications Company. Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Perry G. Christie made the announcement while delivering the keynote address at 30th Annual CANTO (Caribbean Association of National Telecommunications Organizations) Conference & Trade Show, which was held at Atlantis, Paradise Island, on Sunday, 10th August, 2014.

"The Bahamas has been experiencing an interesting period of evolutionary activity in communications. We have privatized our former telecommunications incumbent, BTC; renegotiated the partnership agreement with the majority stakeholder in the BTC so that majority ownership is restored to the Bahamian people; updated our electronic communications sector policy; and positioned our resources to launch the process in short order for the award of a second cellular license in the Bahamian mobile market," said Mr. Christie.

Lil' Chefs summer programme stirs passion for culinary arts
At eight-years-old, Harmony Pyfrom already knows what profession she wants to enter. And this summer, she was working toward that goal by learning the fundamentals of the culinary arts at The College of The Bahamas' "Lil' Chefs Shack: Fun in Da Kitchen".

It was a two-week summer programme held at the Culinary and Hospitality Management Institute that teaches cooking techniques and kitchen etiquette.

"We were having fun cooking and learning how to cook with different ingredients, so that when we grow-up, if we want to be a chef we would know what to use," said Harmony, during a short break from the sessions.

Sandyport hotel enjoys year-long record-breaking occupancy levels
Doing well is how the low-key manager of the Sandyport Beaches Resort and Hotel describes their record breaking year, with weekend occupancy levels often at 100% for the sea-side and Sandyport Marina Village hotel.  Vernon Moss the General Manager at the West Nassau Sandyport Beaches Resort and Hotel states that year over year, occupancy levels are higher overall than previous years since opening in 2000.

"Especially since Easter we've noticed an increase in bookings and very often have sell-out weekends. We're seeing lots of guests from the Family Islands who come to Nassau for events or family gatherings and in June for instance, officials involved with the IAAF World Relay, pushed us to a 98% occupancy rate and we've continued with an average of 82% occupancy since then with forward reservations looking stronger than usual for August and September. Traditionally in September it slows down and I know many of the smaller hotels close in September but we won't, we're too busy."

Melia Nassau Beach inspires re-launch of pig farm
A pig farm that had lain fallow, roofs of its pens scattered across an overgrown field, is now bursting with life, thanks to one hotel's belief in buying locally grown and produced food.  Breathing new life into the piggery located in southwest New Providence is the third time in as many months that the Melia Nassau Beach has boosted Bahamian business through its commitment to local sourcing, something the hotel's Manager Andrew Tilley says works for the resort and its guests, simplifying purchasing, supporting the local economy and giving guests a taste of the country they're visiting.

If it's a win for Melia and its guests, it's an even bigger win for the farm and its owners - Lester Beneby along with Cadrington and Karen Coleby.  The hotel's interest inspired them to rejuvenate the defunct but promising property leased by Beneby. Coleby re-roofed pens damaged in a hurricane, dug a second well, put in new irrigation to provide cooling showers for the pigs, brought in new stock. From one piglet freshly weaned, the farm has grown to 50 in just three months.

Rotarian and security expert, Gaylord Taylor, speaks to the Rotary Club of Grand Bahama Sunrise on fraud
Fraud is a deception deliberately practiced in order to secure unfair or unlawful gain; as a legal construct fraud is both a civil wrong and criminal one.  In The Bahamas, fraud is very prevalent and in fact is on the increase as fraudulent schemes become more complex and diversified. Retail stores and financial institutions such as banks and insurance companies are frequently targeted. The various methods of fraud make it a very attractive method of criminality for enterprising and intelligent individuals.

Fraud rarely attracts the full attention of law enforcement especially in The Bahamas where the common belief is "Thief from thief and God smiles" as most citizens look on this as a victimless crime.  In recent years fraud within The Bahamas has affected they so called "common man" as fraudsters look for susceptible targets for their schemes.

Kids learn about corals and climate change at BREEF San Salvador Sea Camp
"Pants can help you float" - one of the safety tips Joshua Storr and thirty-nine other campers learned at BREEF's eighth annual Sea Camp at Gerace Research Center in San Salvador held from July 21-25.  During the week-long sea camp, children learned water safety skills and how climate change is affecting coral reefs and people in The Bahamas.  Campers eagerly participated in activities including snorkeling and free-diving, games, crafts, science experiments and a beach clean-up.

"The best thing about sea camp is learning how much CO2 we let out in our environment and how I can reduce it to help protect the coral reefs," stated sea camper Jamillah Rolle.  By the end of the camp, children also set personal goals to help slow down climate change. Daverelle Major pledged to "stop leaving on my TV when I am not watching it" and Shante Pratt wants to "grow gardens, plant vegetables, (and) ride my bike more instead of riding cars."

John Hemingway joins anglers in Bimini for upcoming Wahoo Smackdown V
Following in the footsteps of his famous grandfather, author John Hemingway this year has run with the bulls in Pamplona and will be soon fishing the big game grounds off Bimini-the same tiny Bahamas out island where Papa Hemingway chased marlins and tuna aboard his beloved "Pilar" in the 1930s.  In November, John Hemingway will return to Bimini, this time chasing speedy Wahoo as Grand Marshal of the popular Wahoo Smackdown V series, hosted by the historic Bimini Big Game Club Resort and Marina in Alice Town.

The 54-year-old Hemingway will be fishing with Tournament Director Captain Chase Camacho aboard Miss Kethleen II in the tournament, which is scheduled for November 13-14.  "As a writer myself I am a great admirer of my grandfather's works and this also extends to the life he led and the places he visited," said Hemingway.

Grand Bahama's Candice Woon shines in SCAD Rising Star program
by Gail Woon

It was September, 2010 and my 12 year old artist daughter Candice Woon took me to the College Fair at BMES in Freeport on a lazy Sunday afternoon. It was late, the event was almost over, and the last booth we saw was the SCAD (Savannah College of Art & Design) table. The SCAD spokesperson gave Candice the very thick catalogue.  Candice took the catalogue to school every day and read through it during break and at lunch time.  I decided to write to the school's Founder and ask about the possibility of scholarships for international students.

Fast forward to April, 2014, Candice applied to the Rising Star program and was given a partial scholarship. Thanks to her generous grandfather, Maurice Woon, she was able to attend the Rising Star program. On the last day of school at Bishop Michael Eldon School, Candice was, instead, flying to Savannah, Georgia, to register and begin her studies at SCAD.  "The experience at Rising Star was beneficial to get firsthand experience of college as well as earn college credit hours and meet new people from different backgrounds with a similar mentality toward a common interest. It was awesome!" exclaimed Candice.

International filmmaker features Nassau in educational DVD
When the new school year begins, thousands of students will be able to get a snap shot view of the Caribbean through an educational DVD, which features Nassau as one of the best places to visit in the Caribbean.  The DVD - Cities of the Caribbean - was filmed by French filmmaker Patrick Baucelin in conjunction with the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO).

He said it was Nassau's old British charmed that lured in him to the downtown area.  "Nassau is different because of its architecture and colours," Mr. Baucelin said. "You can tell that it has stayed true to its British roots. The people of the city also make it unique. The way they dress, the way they speak is unlike many others in the Caribbean."

Festival Place transforms into authentic village
The change of scenery has been good for vendors at Festival Place as more tourists seem to be interested in doing impulse buying, according to Director of Maritime Tourism Janet Johnson.  The vendors were previously moved to Prince George Wharf to accommodate construction at the popular tourist attraction.  But after a recent uproar from vendors, they were relocated to the courtyard at Festival Place.

To get attraction to the site, tourists were treated to a taste of Junkanoo.  Ms. Johnson said it's just one of the ways entertainment would be enhanced in the area.   "It's a wonderful opportunity for the vendors to interact with the passengers as they are coming and leaving. That way they can take a look at what is here before they go out shopping," she said.

Edukarting Government School Summer Camp Programme wraps up
The Edukarting Summer Camp Programme, now in its second year, finished on August 8th. This year there was a greater mix of ages and schools ranging from 8 years old to 18 years old and it was very rewarding to see the older students mentoring the younger ones. A good display of team spirit, one of the Edukarting objectives. A good showing of girls of varying ages may have added an extra edge to the competition.

This year, the students were lucky enough to be driving on a track of reasonable length as the running track at C.I. Gibson was put to four-wheel use instead of feet. In fact, Mr. Tim Munnings, the Director of Sports for the Ministry of Youth Sports & Culture tested out his four wheel ability instead of his famous feet! With cones in place to form chicanes, the drivers had to navigate their way around the track with time penalties if they nudged or hit any one of them or incurred any other infractions.

Why is the Port so quiet on VAT?

So everybody's talking about VAT but not a word from the GBPA! As they are our pseudo-government why can't they even say one thing are they looking into anything on VAT?  Are we going to get any update from them? What are the directors up to?  I don't get it.

And speaking of the GBPA, take down the banner please!

I was wondering if the Port Authority is going to actually take down the ripped up horrible sign that's on Seahorse road on your way to Grand Lucayan  -  the sign's been there forever and it looks a mess!  Surely someone can take it down?

Signed,

Flapping in the Freeport breeze

The community of Fox Hill joined in a groundbreaking service last Wednesday at Freedom Park for the construction of a monument to remember the four victims of the December 27, 2013 shooting.  Members of the Fox Hill Festival Committee and ministers of religion led the service which was marked with songs, reflections and prayers symbolizing peace and unity.

Emotions ran high as family and friends reflected on the lives of Claudezino Davis, Shenique Sands, Eric Morrison and Shaquille Demeritte, all residents of the Fox Hill community.

In his address, Philip Davis, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Works and Urban Development, called on the residents to pledge to work towards peace and building the common good in memory of the lives of the victims.

He urged the young people to further embrace their community: "It is only as good as you make it. Therefore, it is times like these that we need to continue work together and by doing this it gives the community hope and trust for the rebuilding of this great constituency of Fox Hill. Building a strong community benefits everyone, both the people of Fox Hill and The Bahamas," he said.
