New stamps highlight 75th anniversary of first undersea Post Office
The Bahamas Postal Services announces the release a new series of commemorative stamps on August 16, 2014 which will pay tribute to the 75th anniversary of the world's first undersea Post Office.  The new stamps will depict the pioneering work of John Ernest ("J.E.") Williamson (1881-1966), whose underwater photography drew mass attention to the beautiful and precious natural resources of The Bahamas.  Designed by Derek Miller and printed by Lowe-Martin, the stamps feature a 15 cent stamp, a 50 cent stamp, a 65 cent stamp and a 70 cent stamp.

Williamson's father, Charles Williamson of Norfolk, Virginia, was a sea captain who had invented a tube, which when suspended from a specially outfitted ship, facilitated communication and airflow down to depths of 250 feet. In 1912 Williamson realised that his father's invention could be adapted for undersea photography.

Aviation lawyer: Bahamas has chance to 'get out in front' in drone legislation
Two recent close calls between unmanned aerial vehicles and passenger aircraft on the same day - one incident on the approach into New York's busy LaGuardia airport, the other in California - drew international attention to the increasingly pressing issue about what to do with growing numbers of remotely-controlled drones in crowded airspace.  Now, a Bahamian aviation lawyer and consultant says The Bahamas has a chance to get out in front with drone legislation.

Callenders partner Llewellyn Boyer-Cartwright said the prolific growth in the use of UAVs is leading to an increased need for legislation that would establish rules and regulations governing them in Bahamian air space.  "Currently, there are no proscribed or published guidelines to assist commercial or recreational UAV operators," said Boyer-Cartwright, who is concerned that it is only a matter of time before a close call becomes a call that was a little too close.

Sandals Foundation donates $20,000 to the Ranfurly Home for Children
The kitchen is the "heart of the home" for the kids of the The Ranfurly Home for Children, and soon they will have a refurbished one thanks to a $20,000 donation from the Sandals Foundation.  Ranfurly Home President, Alexandra Maillis-Lynch, said the renovation of the home's kitchen is "long overdue" and that a new kitchen with up-to-date appliances will mean an easier, more sanitary culinary environment for the staff and children.

"Preparing food for more than 30 children every day is an arduous task and the new kitchen facilities will make this task more efficient. They will also allow the children to participate more in the cooking and preparation process," said Mrs. Maillis-Lynch.

Small, two-woman company making waves with ready-to-move-in furniture packages for new construction
Mention construction and instant images of concrete blocks, cement and hard-scrapple men in hard hats come to mind.  But in The Bahamas, a softer side of construction is emerging, thanks to a two-woman company that is transforming newly-built condos and townhomes into inviting, move-in-ready homes. It's the post-construction final touch, the luxurious-looking, highly affordable fully-furnished option that is easing buyer stress and boosting developer sales.

The company is UpStage Bahamas Ltd. Launched just over a year ago, UpStage has created and provided furniture packages for more than two dozen properties. They've furnished sophisticated offices in Nassau, five high-end condominiums, including one at Ocean Club Estates, 19 mid-prized and starter home condos and a large private residence at Balmoral.

Melia Nassau Beach does it again - supports local fishermen
It started with sweet potatoes, onions and peppers, expanded to soursop and limes, and now the hotel that serves local produce to guests is redoubling its efforts to support Bahamian business by purchasing fish, conch and when crawfish season opens, fresh crawfish, from local fishermen.

Andrew Tilley, General Manager of Melia Nassau Beach, explains.  "It makes all the sense in the world to buy as much as you can locally," said Tilley. "It pleases the guests who enjoy tasting true local fare. It is especially appealing because what you are serving is fresh and is being served the same day it was caught. And it supports local business which is very important to the Melia brand."

Cassie the blind kitty on her way home and an update on Canine Distemper
Our good friend (and proud mom of two potcakes), Stephanie Winus, of Long Island, NY, was here for the last week on her annual visit.  It just so happened that former HSGB Board President Chris Johnston was also on the island for a few days last week.  It occurred to us late last week that we might just be able to get Cassie to her new home in Philadelphia without subjecting her to cargo travel.

Sure enough, after much organizing, Cassie left Grand Bahama forever Tuesday, New York bound with Stephanie.  As carry on, Cassie enjoyed a comfortable ride in the cabin with a reassuring human next to her the whole way.   Chris met Stephanie at LaGuardia Airport Tuesday night and transported Cassie back to his home in Manhattan, where she will enjoy two nights with the Johnstons and their cats.

She will finally meet her new mama Thursday morning, who is driving into the city to pick her up.  Cassie will be in her forever home by Thursday evening and it all came about in the least stressful way possible for her!

Going Green: Local students travel to Andros to experience BNT's Eco Camp
On July 19, 2014 four students returned to Grand Bahama after spending a week at the Forfar Field Station in Fresh Creek, Andros at The BNT's  (Bahamas National Trust's) annual Eco Camp. This all expense paid trip was truly an experience the students will remember for a long time to come.

The camp is beyond awesome, the rewards are plentiful and the activities are unprecedented, but you must be willing to give up some things in order to be a part of this incredible experience.  Stripped of their cell phones, computer games, television and outside amenities such as air conditioning, snacks, soda, and Facebook, the children are immersed in an environment that fosters socialization, self awareness, survival skills and an appreciation for nature.

Upon arrival the children are assigned sleeping quarters which are equipped with minimal bare necessities. Up to eight people can share one cabin with four bunk beds and one bathroom. Since the field station is eco-conscious, the plumbing is very crude and saving water is not suggested-it is mandatory. You can use your imagination to figure out what that might mean.

Local writer featured in international travel publications
Travel writer Noelle Khalila is spreading her message about the joys of Family Island travel in regional and international publications. Last week, Washington, D.C. travel writer Jeff Barger published an extensive interview with Noelle on his travel website "In Our Times", sharing Noelle's perspectives on Bahamian culture and the everyday idiosyncrasies of island living.  From the top three things to do in Nassau and the must try experiences when visiting the islands, to the proper way to eat fish island style, Noelle shares personal stories while delving beyond the beach.

"I've travelled quite a bit all around the world, but there was something about the idea of having 700+ unexplored islands in my backyard that just brought me to my roots. That is really the genesis of the Domestic Tourist; I embarked on a mission of self-discovery. The support has been overwhelming, and I think it's because all Bahamians have this unexpressed desire to discover and explore the islands we call home," said Noelle.

Minister of Tourism the Hon Obie Wilchcombe has touted the success of the Junkanoo Summer Festival held during the month of July 2014. "The Bahamas is renowned for its tourism, but they are talking about the hospitality, they are talking about its service and the beauty of this country. So if we work collectively to ensure that we deliver the best product, they can understand how effective and how important it is to our economy," Mr. Wilchcombe said.  He made the observation following the "Tourism is Everybody's Business Rush", Friday, July 25, during which staff of the Ministry of Tourism, corporate sponsors and uniformed groups paraded in downtown Nassau.

The Department of Marine Resources wishes to advise the general public of the opening of the crawfish season on the August 1, 2014 to the March 31, 2015.

The Department of Marine Resources further wishes to remind fishers and all other members of the public that the harvesting and/or of undersized crawfish is against the law and persons are to cease and desist the practice of illegally harvesting these resources. Fishers are also cautioned against capturing egg-bearing crawfish as this practice further aids in the depletion of the crawfish stock in The Bahamas.

Fishers are to take note of the minimum size limit for whole crawfish is size of 3 1/4 inches carapace length. The minimum legal size limit on the crawfish tail is 5 1/2 inches length. All fishers capturing crawfish are required to have a measuring gauge to ensure that they are able to confirm full compliance with the legal size requirements.

Fishers are reminded of the important role the crawfish industry plays in employing thousands of Bahamians and contributing millions of dollars to the economy of The Bahamas. Compliance to the Fisheries Regulations helps to ensure that these benefits will be available for further generations of Bahamians.

The general public is advised to report all suspected violations to the Department of Marine Resources at telephone (242) 393-1014, 393-1015 or 393-1777. All violators of the Fisheries Regulations can expect to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
