"That's why Save The Bays seeks to involve other non-governmental organisations in the broad scope of work that runs the gamut from rebuilding reefs to filing legal action, from funding renewable energy research to monitoring development for sustainability."

New regime to come on stream in telecommunications
Former Financial Secretary Mrs. Ruth Miller has been appointed to head a committee made up of persons from the private and public sectors to advise the Government on the way forward as liberalization in the telecommunications industry comes on stream.  The Prime Minister revealed this much to a gathering at the Mayaguana Airport to celebrate the return of Bahamasair after five years and the airport's newly refurbished runway.

Prime Minister Perry G. Christie announced the possibility of a new company coming into the Bahamas to compete with the Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) in a liberalized telecommunications environment. The liberalization era comes out of an agreement made between the former Government and Cable and Wireless Communications (CWC) on their majority share purchase in BTC and the continued privatization of the industry.

The artificial reefs, consisting of forty-eight reef balls and three hundred and twenty coral antlers, will create the optimal conditions for coral and marine life such as Surgeonfish, Doctorfish and Stoplight Parrotfish to flourish in the area. This initiative follows the company's restoration of Cable Beach that increased beach accessibility and reduced erosion.

Join the Humane Society of Grand Bahama at their Annual General Meeting, Monday, April 28 at Red Beard's Pub at 6:00 p.m.

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." - Gandhi

The Humane Society of Grand Bahama (HSGB) has worked tirelessly for 45 years to tend to the thousands of animals that others put aside.  1,492 animals in 2013; 7,500 over the last five years. Education.  Spaying and neutering.  Medical care.  Housing.  Adoption.  Cruelty rescue.  Picking up stray animals.  We do it all, amazingly with not one penny of government funding.  As you can imagine, it's a hugely difficult task.

Please consider what you can do to help the HSGB to continue in our very important work.  Several current board members are stepping down this year due to work and personal reasons.  As a non-profit organization; an energetic, enthusiastic Board of Directors is crucial to us meeting our goals and helping as many animals as we can, which also improves our community.

Ministry of Works officials tour seawall project in Cat Island
Ministry of Works and Urban Development officials led by Permanent Secretary Colin Higgs and representatives of Urban Renewal 2.0 toured a seawall project in Cat Island Wednesday, April 16.  The project initially started at a cost of $1.8 million and due to underground technical issues is expected to increase to approximately $2.4 million.  Eighteen residents of Cat Island are employed on the project which extends from The Cove to Smiths Bay and is now into its sixth month and anticipated to be completed by the end of May.

Ezra Russell, contractor and president of Marlin Enterprise said the project has been progressing steadily.  He explained that because of the increasing high water mark combined with the effects resulting from hurricanes it was discovered that roads were being eroded. KB making music to save the environment
Kirkland 'KB' Bodie, The Bahamas' best-selling musician, is drawing crowds belting out a chorus with a cause at a series of concerts around the country.  Sponsored by Save The Bahamas, the concerts kicked off in late December in Nassau and hit Abaco last weekend where the second event in Marsh Harbour drew more than 250 people.

Long a proponent of protecting the environment, KB has recorded videos with a beach backdrop and written several environmentally-themed pieces, including Save The Bays with the popular refrain, "Rise up, Bahamas, Let your voices blaze, Stand up Bahamas, Come on let's save the bays, God gave us this land, and this land we must save, Stand up, Bahamas, come on let's save the bays."

According to Save The Bays CEO Lindsey McCoy, who helped organize the Abaco concerts April 11 and 12, the concerts helped deliver a 'powerful, positive message about how important the environment is to every Bahamian.'

NBA legend fishes Bimini flats
By: John Bell

More than 50 summers ago, I first laid eyes on John Havlicek.  He and his Ohio State teammates Jerry Lucas, Bobby Knight, Larry Siegfried, Mel Nowell and Dick Reasbeck, (whose father drove our school bus in Martins Ferry, Ohio), were playing for the NCAA Men's Division National Championship in 1961. The flickering black and white TV images are still ingrained in my memory, and I can hear my father pointing out that Havlicek was from the same tiny village where he was born-Lansing, Ohio (pop. 300).

They lost to Cincinnati that day, but the long-ago tournament was the start my admiration for the rangy 6'5" Havlicek, who went on to a storied 16-year career in the NBA with the Boston Celtics.  For me Hondo Havlicek was The Man, but until last week, just a name on my unfulfilled bucket list of people I would like to meet.

BNT challenges students to help prevent invasive species
The Bahamas National Trust (BNT) recently brought fun to the Discovery Club program by challenging its 41 Discovery Clubs nationwide to create attention grabbing Public Service Announcements (PSAs) to increase awareness of invasive species and the problems that these unwelcomed guests cause.

"The BNT is pleased to have been able to coordinate this creative opportunity for young people in our Discovery Club to share their views on this environmental issue that plagues many of our islands. Because we are molding the next generation of environmental leaders, it is important for us to hear their thoughts on issues like Invasive Species"

The Discovery Club students were instructed to compose inspiring messages that clearly outlined the threats posed by invasive species and the importance of being able to identify invaders and take action to control or eradicate them.

Club members and leaders accepted the challenge and submitted hundreds of entries to the BNT for judging in the areas of content, originality, technical production and format.

With hundreds of entries to choose from, the judges had a tough decision and after much deliberation, Dejae Woods from Nicholls Town Primary Discovery Club, Andros won first place.   Second place went to Kelsey Marshall and Joshua Kelly of Friends of the Environment Discovery Club in Abaco and Muimi McClure from Albury Sayles Primary Discovery Club in New Providence won third place.

The Discovery Club program was started almost 20 years ago and involves nearly 900 club members throughout The Bahamas.  The program is designed to take environmental science classes outdoors to expose members to a wide variety of field activities that keep them interested and excited about nature and fostering good stewardship of our environment.
