Successful bilateral discussions between The Bahamas and Haiti
Foreign Affairs Minister, Fred Mitchell, termed recent bilateral discussions between the governments of The Bahamas and Haiti "successful".  Migration and technical cooperation including matters of trade and expanding The Bahamas' diplomatic presence in Haiti were among topics of the discussions during the meetings on March 27.  The Bahamian delegation included Minister of State for National Security, Keith Bell; Assistant Director of Immigration, Hubert Ferguson; and Royal Bahamas Defence Force Commodore, Roderick Bowe.

On the issue of migration, which he described as perhaps most "vexing", Minister Mitchell said, "While we cannot fix this problem, we can better manage the problem and that is what the discussions in Haiti were about.  "We wanted to be sure that the Haitian Government understood and that we have an understanding with them about the level of exasperation we have on this issue and that we pledge to work together to try and resolve the migration of people into this country unlawfully and without documents from the north of Haiti."

Director of Youth challenges students to follow passion
Aspiring cosmetologists were on Monday told that they would only succeed in the field if they are passionate about it and exude excellence.  Director of Youth, K. Darren Turnquest in a spirited address to cosmetology students of The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) encouraged them to take their chosen career path seriously.

"Cosmetology is a competitive field. If you don't love what you're doing, pack up your boxes and get out. It's not your mission or ministry. You are not just cosmetologists; you are therapists. People don't want to come into the chair of those who aren't confident about themselves," said the director.  Mr. Turnquest reassured students that following what they are passionate about reaps the most rewards. He challenged the students to seek their purpose in life.

Attorney Ferreira calls on students to join the fight to preserve the Bahamas for their own grandchildren

The fight to protect the environment from the scourge of unregulated development is ultimately a struggle to defend the rights of each and every Bahamian, a top environmental attorney told C.V. Bethel students.  Romi Ferreira told members of the school's Young Marine Explorers club that while the lack of environmental protection laws is an obvious cause for concern ecologically speaking, it is also a question of social justice.

"We are being pushed inland," he said. "Bahamians are being denied access to their own shoreline.  "Once the coast is developed, you can't go there unless you can pay. The average Bahamian can't afford the two or three million it costs to live on the water."

Stories from the heart after Mission: Potcake
There were so many individual stories involving both people and animals during Mission: Potcake ... some happy, some sad, and some just downright heartwarming.  We asked some of our local volunteers if they would be inclined to write a few paragraphs about any part of their experience, in order to share a different perspective.  Below are two such stories, both written by HSGB Board Member Michelle Lovatt.

Andrew and Tracey

Andrew showed up the first day of the clinic.  I did not know him nor did I know that he had brought his dog Tracey and his calico cat to be fixed.  It was the first day of the clinic so things were new to everyone and it was my job to run the board and see that no unauthorized people entered the surgical area.  The cats were being placed by the entrance and there was a young man that kept talking to a cat. I asked him what he was doing there and he told me that was his cat that he was talking to and that he had also brought his dog Tracey to be fixed.  Tracey was a beautiful black dog, she was stunning.  It was clear to me that he took care of her.

Out west the birding is great!
The recent fieldtrip by the Grand Bahama Birding Group to the western end of the island resulted in several "lifebirds" for members of the group.  Mr. Derek Gape, director at the Ginn development at West End had opened up the property to the birders to survey the many ponds in the area. Among the 40 species recorded that morning, a Northern Harrier Hawk was one of the new birds to be recorded swooping low over one of the ponds!

The group then became mesmerized by a pair of rare Swallow-tailed Kites sitting side by side in a Casuarina tree, allowing everybody to get excellent views for at least 15 minutes. One of the birds circled slowly over the birders then returned to its mate.  A large number of 83 Royal Terns were observed along the West End shoreline and the unusual sighting of so many birds of that species was even questioned by Cornell University when the group later submitted their observations into the eBird database of that institution. Several photos taken of the terns substantiated the sightings.

Doula Delight: The association between the syntocinon use and autism
Naturally occurring oxytocin is produced by the brain (in the hypothalamus and secreted from the posterior pituitary gland) in increasing amounts as a pregnancy approaches term (39 weeks 0 days to 40 weeks, 6 days). The muscle layer of the uterus (myometrium) has specific receptor sites (oxytocin friendly and welcoming) programed for the uptake of oxytocin. The number of these receptor sites reaches a maximum in early labor at term.1 Released in pulses, naturally occurring oxytocin is responsible for generating spontaneous uterine contractions that increase in frequency (how often they happen), length (how long they last) and strength (how strong they are) as labor progresses. One could say that "oxytocin is the maker of mothers."

Syntocinon (Syntocin) is the drug most commonly used agent for labor induction/augmentation world-wide. Syntocin (Pitocin ... used interchangeably in this article) is a synthetic oxytocin that is used to stimulate contractions to begin labor or to intensify the strength of weak and ineffective uterine contractions (augmentation) as well as to combat post-partum hemorrhage. Augmentation of labor is done to "pick-up," as in to intensify, a labor that has begun but is slow to progress or perhaps that has stalled. In contrast, the induction of labor is the forcing of labor to begin.

Top judge warns against permits for Bimini developer
One of the country's top judges has warned of implications for the rule of law if the controversial Bimini Bay development is allowed to forge ahead while still subject to judicial challenge.  Court of Appeal Justice Abdulai Conteh told lawyers for the government and Resorts World Bimini that any construction at the resort site could put the entire case at risk.

"In a democracy, no self-respecting government would do anything to jeopardize proceedings before the court," he said.  "When there is a contested issue, one should not change the facts on the ground until a decision is made."

Justice Conteh's comments came as the appeal, lodged by environmental groups Bimini Blue Coalition and Save The Bays, was again adjourned - this time to June 2.

South Bimini Airport to welcome its first-ever night flight
The Bahamian government will welcome the next installment of Resorts World Bimini's $150 million investment in the Bimini islands on Thursday April 3, 2014 when night flights begin arriving at South Bimini Airport for the first time in the island's history. The addition of new flight instrumentation and runway lighting will enable civilian aircraft to land 24 hours a day. At the end of the erg-a-thon, the NRC contingent rowed exactly 212.213 kilometres, approximately the distance from Nassau to Hawksbill Creek, Grand Bahama. Total distance rowed surpassed last year's total due to a growing adult section and a robust competitive juniors section, which grew from two to seven this year.

Letter: Straighten-up and fly right Scotiabank Bahamas
Open letter to the Managing Director of Scotiabank Bahamas

Dear Sir or Madame:

I was awfully disappointed in your service at your Bay street Branch today, where I was harassed and denied great care by your security officer at the door and a young male customer service representative; who insisted that I will only be served if I took my hat off.

I have also executed transactions at the Royal Bank Bay Street Branch and Bank of The Bahamas on Shirley Street today, and I was given outstanding service and care by the good staff at those two banks - with my hat on.

MUDDASICK! Grand Bahama, where is the pride?
Grand Bahama, especially Freeport, is looking like a broke down, pop down old junk yard!  I am furious every time I drive on West Mall Drive pass Butler's Specialty Store.  People drop garbage all along the street and verges, and the workers from Sanitation Services, just simply throw them further into the bushes.

Persons come through South Bahamia and discard food containers and cups along the main residential street with no care.  I don't understand, where is the pride?
