U.S. Government releases The Bahamas' 2013 Human Rights Report
On Thursday, February 27, 2014, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry delivered remarks to the United States Congress in Washington, D.C. on the 2013 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices (HRRs).  Since 1977, the Department of State has been required to submit Human Rights reports to Congress.  They now cover all United Nations member states and others in accordance with the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 and the Trade Act of 1974.  Congress requires this information on the human rights situation so that it can take it into account in making policy decisions on assistance, trade, and other areas of the bilateral relationships.

The reports cover internationally recognized human rights, as set forth in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international agreements. The publication of the annual report reflects U.S. interest in, and support for, the advancement of human rights around the world.  U.S. strength and prosperity are more secure in a world where governments protect rights and freedoms that are the birthright of all persons. The annual report highlights the importance of human rights to U.S. foreign policy and national security.

Bahamas urged to become global beacon for protection of marine environment
The Bahamas is perfectly placed to lead the way in saving the world's oceans, a world renowned marine scientist told a gathering of scientists and conservationists on Monday night.

Speaking at the opening of the second annual Bahamas Natural History conference, American oceanographer, explorer and author Dr Sylvia Earle said the history of marine conservation efforts and the responsive attitude of successive governments mean that no country is now better placed to set an example for the rest of the world.

"The Bahamas can be the leader in showing the way to save the oceans, and by extension, our way of life," she said. "You can do this, you can be the beacon for the world."

Sky's the limit for young entrepreneurs calling for drone industry regulations
Lance Knowles and George Mosko, the two young Bahamians whose unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photography and cinematography business has skyrocketed since its launch just over one year ago, today said they will seek government's consideration of regulating the rapidly expanding drone industry. Knowles' and Mosko's company, Sky High Media LTD, has employed highly sophisticated camera platforms mounted on multi-rotor UAVs to do work for government agencies, security, major resorts, real estate developments, on movie sets and more.

They have just wrapped shoots in Florida for Busch Gardens and Sea World, and are leaving this week for a shoot in Grand Cayman.  But while they are taking the business of unmanned aerial cinematography to new heights, they worry that an unregulated atmosphere could lead to an explosion in the popularity of drones with hobbyists failing to recognize or honour rules of the airways.

Palm Cay revs up excitement at Miami International Boat Show
Representatives of a fast-growing New Providence development returned from the Miami International Boat Show this week with reports of their best year ever in the show that spans 2.5 million square feet, attracting tens of thousands of visitors shopping or dreaming over a fantasy land of boats, all things marine, exotic destinations and, more recently, real estate.

For Palm Cay there was a steady stream of traffic at the booth they shared with the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism from opening to closing daily. "There were a few times when people lined up to get more information about The Bahamas and about Palm Cay," said Zack Bonczek, Palm Cay Director of Sales and Marketing. "Of course, we were trying to make it fun, too, encouraging show goers to enter in a Palm Cay photo contest to win a free weekend stay in one of our beachfront townhomes."

Sun shines on super-successful 29th Annual HSGB Dog Show
Almost 400 people and 78 dogs came out for the 29th Annual HSGB Dog Show last Saturday.  Mother Nature blessed us with a beautiful warm, sunny day and a good time was had by all.  The wonderful turnout ensured the event was also a financial success for the shelter animals who depend so on community support for their care and well being.

There were giant dogs and tiny dogs, medium size dogs, senior dogs and adorable puppies. There were pedigreed dogs and almost pedigreed and everything in between.  So many beautiful and varied dogs; a real challenge for our guest judge Andrea, who we are most grateful to for taking the time to help us with this fun event.

Corey Damianos and his beautiful German Shepherd Dog "Max" took the top honors, winning the Herding Group and then going on to win Best in Show. This is the second year in a row one of Corey's dogs won the top prize!

Airport showing the WOW factor
Advertising has really taken off in Grand Bahama with new vibrant ads being placed in both the international and domestic terminals of the Grand Bahama International Airport. Both the Bahamian Brewery and Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) were the first ads to be installed in both terminals, each company having capitalised on their Nassau advertising success.

"We've had some great reactions to the new ads that are up in both the international and domestic areas of the airport," said Sarah Kirkby, Barefoot Marketing, and on-island sales rep for Airport Advertising Freeport (AAF). This is a great venue to capitalise on the arriving tourists, winter residents, businessmen and women, and even our own Bahamians returning from vacation trips."

Presentation by Sarah St. George,
Vice Chairman The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited
"Building on 60 Years of Development"
At Grand Bahama Business Outlook

Next year will mark 60 years of the birth of the City of Freeport; 60 years since the signing of the Hawksbill Creek Agreement; 60 years of development and the fulfillment of a dream; and 60 years of a partnership between The Government of The Bahamas and The Grand Bahama Port Authority. I was also born in 1955 which helps me to remember the date. As you can see, both Freeport and I have weathered a few storms! But they say Life Begins at 60!

What is The Hawksbill Creek Agreement? - What does it mean? It is in a sense the Fabric of Freeport - you could call it the Magic Carpet under the Magic City --

Doula Delight: Birth wishes as opposed to birth plans

Human dignity is the conceptual/ theoretical basis for human rights. Human dignity is a matter of respect for the personhood of one human being for another. This esteem, of one person for another, requires that individuals are allowed to make choices as he/she believes suits him/her best. Embrace of this belief (autonomy) is the anchoring principle of bioethics and the very platform from which healthcare is launched. The ethical principle of autonomy, the right (not privilege) of the individual to self-determine, is at the very core of the respect for persons. This is the right of persons to make choices regarding one's own welfare free of coercion from others.

INFORMED CHOICE means that clients have the information necessary to make educated and informed decisions about their healthcare. The requirements to execute an informed decision include:

Olympians make mark on Farmer's Cay
Conrad Leinemann was already on the boat when staff from Ty's Sunset Bar & Grill hollered for him to come back.  Leinemann, a Canadian volleyball player who competed in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, and holds the record for world's fastest serve at 104.4km, didn't think twice.  He leapt from the boat, splashed through knee-deep water and walked up the beach at Farmer's Cay, Exuma.

Inside, management at Ty's Sunset Bar & Grill asked if the Olympian would sign a volleyball so the employees could place it behind the bar.  Leinemann did one better.  He called over Josh Binstock, a fellow Olympic volleyball player who competed in the 2012 Olympic Games in London, and they both signed the ball and presented the keepsake to one of the island's school children.

Domestic travel to be exempt from VAT
Value Added Tax (VAT) will not be charged on any form of domestic travel, State Finance Minister Michael Halkitis told residents of Killarney March 3.  Responding to questions during a Progressive Liberal Party branch association meeting at Casuarinas Hotel, Halkitis confirmed that travel by air, land and sea between islands will be totally exempt when the new tax regime comes into effect.

"The government has considered the domestic tourism market and understands how Bahamians love travelling to family islands," he said.  Halkitis also said that today, as opponents of VAT continue to state that "everything will go up 15%", he can only assume this is deliberate misinformation.

At the Movies: 3 Days to Kill
This movie does not have a tagline. Before he can build a closer relationship with his estranged wife and daughter, an international spy must complete one last mission so he can get access to an experimental drug that could save his life. As he hunts down a ruthless terrorist, he must also look after his teenage daughter for the first time in ten years with his wife out of town. He must now juggle the toughest assignment of his career while dealing with the family he previously kept at  arm's length to keep away from this type of danger.

There are few works of art in the action movie script department, but when a script is written by Luc Besson you know you are going to get a slice of European life in the middle of some respectable violence. When you hear a movie is being directed by McG then you just have to hope that the actors involved will help him raise his standard of storytelling on screen to something worthy of respect. I can't trash this film because I had fun watching it and I found the pace to be in keeping with what was required of this type of movie.

BNT renews longstanding relationship with Audubon

The Bahamas National Trust (BNT) recently hosted a reception where they signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with one of their longest standing partners, the National Audubon Society.

Audubon is a non-profit organization dedicated to environmental conservation with a special focus on birds.  The purpose of this MOU is to formalize a mutual collaboration between National Audubon and BNT, specifically to improve the conservation of bird habitats and key species within the National Park System and throughout The Bahamas.

"Audubon has been dedicated to conservation effort in the Bahamas for more than a century," commented David Yarnold, President and CEO of Audubon.  "Audubon has helped to establish the Wild Bird Protection Act, protected the dwindling flamingo population in the 1950s - which saved flamingos from near extinction, provided scientific guidance for the establishment of the first ever Land and Sea Park in the Exumas and provided the science for White-crowned Pigeons that established hunting bag limits."

This most recent collaboration focuses on the Piping Plovers one of North America's most endangered shorebirds.  However, an international census has shown that large numbers of Piping Plovers spend winter in the Berry Islands, Joulter Cays and on the flats in Central Andros.
