 |

On a day when their exuberance and pride were at the summit, the newest alumni of The College of The Bahamas heard a message aimed at grounding their excitement in the realities of what it means to be an actively engaged Bahamian and a citizen of the world.
And the messenger was a university professor and Rhodes Scholar who challenged the Fall 2013 Commencement Class at its Commencement ceremony to recognize and appreciate the genius that surrounds them, to be accountable for their own excellence and to mentor young college and university students. Dr. Christian Campbell stood before the graduates, who numbered almost 300, and asked "How do we navigate a world and a country that are in some ways deeply unequal?"

| Save The Bays supports YMCA Learn to Swim SOS program |
 |
Declaring it was proud to help impart lifesaving skills to children growing up on an island surrounded by water, the fast-growing environmental movement Save The Bays today presented a substantial grant to the YMCA SOS Learn to Swim program in Grand Bahama.
The contribution will pave the way for thousands of children to take an in-the-water course that could save lives.
Some 13,000 pre-school and primary school students have already benefitted from the SOS (Swim for Ocean Survival) course, according to Grand Bahama YMCA Executive Director Karon Johnson, and this contribution will enable even more.
"We can't thank Save the Bays enough for seeing the importance of this program," said Johnson. "The course is designed to teach kids to survive, first and foremost, in an underwater situation. As they get older we work to introduce them to opportunities provided by competitive swimming and thirdly, we want to them to have the skills to enjoy our marine environment so they don't have a fear of the sea."

Over thirty of BORCO's key employees in the Incident Command System (ICS), which is a part of the company's emergency preparedness team, participated in the training session. ICS covers personnel, policies, procedures, facilities, and equipment for both large and small emergencies.
"Here at BORCO, we want to both minimize the chance of oil spills and effectively prepare our staff to handle spills in the event they occur," stated Robert Gaffney, Vice President of International Operations for BORCO. "While we hope to never implement these practices for an oil spill emergency, the training session was most valuable in educating our staff about emergency procedures."

"When we first decided to serve a local market with export potential, we began sourcing top grade tobacco in order to produce a cigarette without harmful additives," said CTE investor Adam Dann. "We also wanted the packaging and image to be upbeat, reflecting the sunshine of The Bahamas.
But, Dann said, they knew they were up against one of the toughest markets of all - a product with intense brand loyalty.

COLUMN: Doula Delight Doula Delight: Redefining term birth |
 |
|
So how old does a baby have to be to be born safely? When asked this question, over 50 % of women stated "between 34 to 36 weeks.
In 1970 the Second European Congress of Perinatal Medicine subjectively proclaimed that a baby born at the end of its 37th week of gestation to 41 completed weeks of gestation is a term birth.
Translated loosely, the five week period, three weeks before to two weeks after an estimated birth date, was thought to be a safe time for a baby to be born. Consequently, this understanding of term became the gestational milestone that physicians, midwives and families embraced. It was assumed that these late pre-term babies, because they were so near to term, had similar health outcomes to those of full term infants. However, current research exposes the fallacy of the belief that "newborn outcomes are uniform" after 37 weeks for all babies.

FEATURE STORY: The Bahamas soars to top ten ranking in 'World's Ten Best Ethical Destinations' list |
|
|
|
Ethical Traveler, a non-profit organization that compiles an annual list of countries to visit around the world, has named The Bahamas in their World's Ten Best Ethical Destinations for 2014. The Bahamas National Trust (BNT) is proud that their initiatives were part of the major factors when compiling the list and they have helped return The Bahamas to the top ten.
"We're pleased to welcome The Bahamas back to our list this year. Efforts to establish new Marine Protected Areas and the massive expansion of the number of protected acres in Andros West Side National Park (pictured below) are important steps towards conservation and sustainability," stated the article published on the Ethical Traveler website: 'The World's Ten Best Ethical Destinations - 2014' which was released earlier this month.
"This is wonderful news for the BNT," commented Eric Carey, Executive Director of the BNT. "This is good news for The Bahamas and it validates the work that we are doing. This also gives great justification for our efforts to convince the Government to create even more national parks. 2014."
In addition to mentioning the work the BNT is doing with national parks, the report also noted the environmental education programs in our islands. "Education programs for Bahamian youth were established more than 30 years ago. Today, thousands of Bahamian school children have experienced nature through organized visits to national parks and award-winning presentations."
Portia Sweeting, BNT's Director of Education commented "Increasing environmental stewardship in The Bahamas is a standing strategic objective of the BNT. We are really proud to have connected so many Bahamians to our national Parks through our education programmes.
"We strive to provide extraordinary hands-on national park encounters to engage school children, community and social youth groups as well as a large cadre of volunteers."
