| Yendise Marie Collie - Yes she can! |
 |
|
When the 2013 graduates of The Vanguard School in Lake Wales, Florida took their places recently, Yendise Marie Collie of Nassau, The Bahamas, with eyes that beamed brightly, stood proudly in their midst. This was a significant milestone for Yendise because medical experts 20 years ago gave up on her. Born at 27 weeks gestation and weighing only 2lbs, her parents were told to "go home and get on with their lives". Yendise, they said, should have been aborted and that she may never walk, talk or make first grade.
Her graduation is a testament to her tenacity, determination, hard work and a sheer desire to achieve her goals. When asked what those goals are, her response is "to be an elementary school teacher, to work with special needs children like me."

| Crossing-For-A-Cure to launch record stand-up paddleboard Gulf Stream crossing attempt |
 |
|
Among the hundreds gathered at the Lake Worth Inlet to welcome Travis Suit and his three companions at the conclusion of their Bimini to Palm Beach County crossing will be Suit's 5-year old daughter, Piper-the inspiration behind his record attempt to cross the mighty Gulf Stream on stand-up paddleboards.
The goal behind this Crossing-For-A-Cure is to raise revenue and increase awareness for cystic fibrosis, the most common chronic lung disease in children and young adults. Piper Suit was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis in November 2011 after numerous doctors first diagnosed her symptoms as normal childhood illnesses.
The plan is to push off from the docks of the historic Bimini Big Game Club Resort & Marina in the late afternoon on August 2nd (weather conditions permitting) and paddling ten hours due west and then adjust to a north/northwest direction to target an arrival some 24 hours later at the Lake Worth Inlet near Peanut Island.

FEEDBACK - Letters to the Editor LETTER: Halkitis was dishonest about new cruiser fees |
 |
|
Last week, State Minister Michael Halkitis told the media that new cruiser fees for pleasure boats being collected by Customs as of July 1 was being done by Customs without government approval. He is quoted as saying the government never intended for the fees to be created or collected at all, and that Customs came up with the idea of the fees on their own but that the government "told them no".
The controversial cruiser permit fees in question are an increase to $400 for vessels over 35 feet and an increase to $1,000 for extensions of permits past a period of 12 months. Both new fees are laid out in the new Customs Management Act, passed by Parliament & Senate during the 2013/2014 Budget Debate. So the Minister did not speak the truth to the media when he said the government never came up with those fees - the fees are now the law of the land via the government's own Customs Management Act which came into effect on July 1, 2013.

The Value Added Tax, its impact on The Bahamas: A Caribbean perspective
In my recent address, as part of the celebration of Bahamas' 40th Anniversary of its Independence, I called attention to the fact that the environment within which the development of Caribbean societies takes place has been subject to dramatic transformation.
I further stated that countries which failed or showed themselves as being too slow to adapt to their changed environment run the risk of falling behind in the race to development, and, at worst, of becoming failed societies.
This address today draws upon that perspective in offering an opinion on the likely impact of the introduction of a Value Added Tax on the Commonwealth of the Bahamas.

That context was set out with wonderful clarity in an Article by A. Gabrielle Frasier at the 2001 Conference of the Caribbean Centre for Monetary Studies:
"Can the Sir Stafford Sands Model of the Bahamian Economy Survive Today's Global Economy?"
