Finland boasts of the best comprehensive school system in the world and 100 percent literacy, but is also plagued with similar issues to that of The Bahamas.
"We have noted that Finland shares at least one of the social challenges besetting The Bahamas, namely that of immigration and how to balance its positive and negative aspects," Sir Arthur said.

| Leaders of the Coalition to Protect Clifton Bay stress importance for government to regulate and guard crown land |
 |
|
Representing the Coalition to Protect Clifton Bay during a lively interview on Darrold Miller Live this week, Coalition directors Fred Smith, QC and Joe Darville called attention to the government's responsibility to implement regulations, maintain transparency and safeguard the nation's crown land. Both men urged passage of a Freedom of Information Act and an Environmental Protection Act.
"Without the Freedom of Information Act, governments have had a free hand at giving away or selling at a very low price land that belongs to us," said Darville. "It is reprehensible, wrong and it's a theft of our property for it to be given away without our approval."

| The animals of West End, Grand Bahama, need help your help |
 |
|
We didn't plan a trip to West End on Monday, but when we got a call that morning about someone killing puppies in a horrific manner, we had to go.
We could find no evidence or willing witnesses, but the police have promised to speak strongly to the supposed offender. (The only witnesses were children.)
We were determined to get every puppy in that area we could find.
Between Monday and Tuesday's two trips, we ended up with 21 puppies and 4 adults - pretty good for a two door Ford Explorer; currently our only duty-paid vehicle.
The puppies are all very young, but not much used to handling. There was a lot of pulling puppies out from under cars, boat trailers and other objects, in addition to some interesting scary dirty forays into very thick bush, with some very vehement objection on the part of some of the pups; but all were captured safely and with only minor injuries to the humans!

FEEDBACK - Letters to the Editor LETTERS: The state of our Bahamas |
 |
|
365 Days Later
The most important recollection of mine from the 2012 General Election was the profound feeling of disappointment I had, because I knew that everything we are experiencing today and worse to come, is what we would experience as a result of our decision at the polls.
It is my hope that in the future, Bahamians will stop being lazy in their democracy, get their minds right and vote according to issues, facts and knowledge - not personalities, payments, promises of payments and petty things that have nothing to do with good governance.

Facebook and the rights of Bahamians
Facebook is free for all, but it doesn't mean that we are liberated to slander others with impunity - or to make vile threats against brothers and sisters without consequences. Facebook was not designed to override the justice system, or to be a place where public trials and inquiries are conducted by citizens - in the name of justice.
I have noticed recently, that some of our Bahamian brothers and sisters are using Facebook to exercise their so called rights, while they infringe on the rights of others. This cannot be right.

FEATURE STORY: PM declares Friday May 10 World Lupus Day in The Bahamas |

Local support group urges Bahamians to P.O.P. (Put On Purple) for Lupus on Friday.
The Rt. Hon. Perry G. Christie, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, has declared Friday May 10, 2013 World Lupus Day in The Bahamas. The official proclamation came as a result of efforts from local support group Lupus 242 to raise awareness in the country.
On Friday, Bahamians will join others around the world as they recognize the impact the chronic autoimmune disease has on those living with lupus. An estimated 5.5 million persons globally live with the disease brought on by genetics, environment and hormonal imbalances in the body. Common symptoms include debilitating pain, fatigue and unexplained flare-ups impacting random parts of the body especially internal organs.
Lupus 242 is urging Bahamians to P.O.P (Put On Purple) on Friday May 10, to raise awareness.
"Putting on purple is a simple way to show support for this cause. Whether it's a tie, a blouse or even purple shoes, we want to appeal to the general public, corporate Bahamas and schools to participate in this exercise on May 10," said Shonalee Johnson, group Vice President and Public Relations Officer. "On behalf of Lupus 242, I would like to thank the government of The Bahamas for making this official declaration. This is a global exercise and we want to do our part locally to stop and recognize the impact that lupus has on lives here in The Bahamas."
