COLUMN: Doula Delight Doula Delight: Important websites to visit for expectant parents |
 |
|
DO YOU KNOW about these trustworthy websites for expectant parents to visit?
With the plethora of information available on the World Wide Web (www) and the more recent embrace of social media, healthcare consumers are easily overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information available to them. It can be difficult at times to know which sources are credible and reliable. Contrary to the thinking of many that "because it's on the internet, the information is accurate," a consumer must consider the source of the "facts" with a critical mind and some degree of sophistication.
The following website links provide childbearing consumers with research-based facts. While alike in their efforts to promote natural, safe and healthy birth outcomes, each organization listed below has a unique approach to the message it broadcasts.

The police investigators have determined the shooting was justified. They did find the officer erred in not allowing us to remove the dog for medical attention.

FEEDBACK - Letters to the Editor LETTER: By Coalition to Protect Clifton Bay member Mr. Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. |
 |
|
To the Editor:
I have spent more than 30 years as an advocate and litigator on behalf of grassroots and minority groups in Canada, the U.S., the Caribbean, and Latin and Central America, challenging the attempts by large corporations and powerful political entities to control and privatize the commons - the air, water, aquifers, fisheries, beaches, and public lands - that are by law, and tradition, the shared property of the broader public including the poor.
In the Caribbean, I have used the courts, community campaigns and public forums to challenge grabs by multinational hotel chains, developers and government agencies who seek to gain exclusive control of the reefs, fisheries, beaches and entire islands. This includes the successful crusade, led by thousands of courageous Puerto Ricans, to halt U.S. Navy practice bombardments on the island of Vieques in 2001 - for which many of us went to prison.

FEATURE STORY: Op-Ed: What I have learned about autism by U.S. Chargé d'Affaires John Dinkelman |
|

|
By John Dinkelman
Chargé d'Affaires
The Embassy of the United States of America
Nassau, Bahamas
"Your child has autism." Words that no parent could ever fully be prepared to hear. Yet for millions of parents each year, they are the unwelcome introduction into a dramatically different world of permanently altered hopes and expectations.
I am one of those parents.
As I take the opportunity during Autism Awareness Month to look back at my experiences in dealing with an autism spectrum diagnosis for two of my three children, I recall that one of the most difficult parts of my experience has been all of the confusing, and often conflicting, information available about the causes of autism. Additionally, the legion of well-meaning (and sometimes not so well-meaning) people with possible treatments and promised cures - each invariably very expensive and unproven, did little to lessen the pain, or the burden that a diagnosis of autism places on a family.
What we do know is that autism is a spectrum of closely related disorders with a shared core of symptoms. Autism spectrum disorders appear in infancy and early childhood, causing delays in many basic areas of development such as speech, play, and interaction with others. The signs and symptoms of autism vary widely, as do the effects. Some autistic children have only mild impairments, while others have greater obstacles to overcome.
While there are no definitive figures on the number of people affected by autism here in The Bahamas; we do know that the government of the United States monitors such things and that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identify approximately 1 in 88 American children as being on the autism spectrum. This is a ten-fold increase in prevalence in the past 40 years.
