Participants of LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Celebrate Completion of Program!

Participants from the first session of LIVESTRONG at the YMCA at the Y's Quincy Branch celebrated their completion of the 12-week program on Thursday, June 2nd. The group of 10 cancer survivors spent their final class reminiscing about the positive experience and journey that this program provided, and how, together, they successfully conquered the challenges that each class set forth with the unconditional support of the entire group every step of the way. At the conclusion of the class, each participant received a certificate for their completion of the program, an emotional feat among the group of ten cancer survivors, their instructors, Y staff and volunteers.

SSYMCA Staff Attend Joint Committee on Public Health to Share Need for the Prevention and Wellness Trust Fund!

On Tuesday, June 14th, the South Shore YMCA's Karen Peterson, Association Director of Healthy Living and Katelyn Szafir, Director of Medical Wellness Programs, attended the Joint Committee on Public Health to advocate for the Prevention and Wellness Trust Fund. Established as part of a 2012 health care cost containment law, the Prevention and Wellness Trust Fund is a program that supports local partnerships working to prevent chronic health conditions. The South Shore YMCA is one of six YMCAs across Massachusetts participating in the trust fund.

As funding approaches its June 2017 expiration, representatives from organizations receiving funding used this opportunity to share the enormous benefits that programs made possible by the Prevention and Wellness Trust Fund have had on participants. Karen spoke about the importance of the clinical and community collaborations that have been strengthened through this grant initiative. The implementation of Electronic Referral from the primary care providers directly to the SSYMCA is an example of one of the system changes needed to make this possible. To date, the Quincy Weymouth partnership has processed over 1,300 referrals and the impact is expected to grow exponentially.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation Makes a Splash!

This spring, the South Shore YMCA received notification that its Partnership Program would receive a boost from the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. A natural extension of the Partnership Program, the Aquatics Partnership Program, takes place in the pool. And that is where the Foundation is making its local impact. It recently made grants of over $735,482 to 107 nonprofit organizations in the United States that improve opportunities, access and day-to-day quality of life for families and individuals living with disabilities, including funds with which the South Shore YMCA purchased adaptive aquatics equipment for use in the Quincy Y pools. Be sure to look for them in use the next time you visit the Quincy Y!

Camp Burgess & Hayward Staff Appeal Raises Over $10,500 to Send Kids to Camp!
On Thursday, June 23rd, 150 seasonal resident camp staff members gathered for a common cause: to ensure that the life-changing experiences of camp are available to all. Giving from their hearts they donated $10,500 for camperships that will enable kids whom they have not yet met to attend Camp Burgess & Hayward this summer, kids with whom the camp staff will spend their summer days and nights. All summer long camp staff teach leadership skills to our future leaders, and on Thursday night they led by example as philanthropic leaders.
