STATE OF THE ARTS

Hello Friend!

Our team has enjoyed a multitude of conversations with incredible staff, members, and participants who have been curious about "that building across the parking lot." More specifically they want to know what we, 'do IN there?!'  Over the past year, this conversation has moved from the halls of the Emilson Y to Laura's Center.  Curious members and locals are taking it upon themselves to experience Laura's Center for the Arts directly.  What a pleasure to connect with our members, participants, and locals who arrive almost daily now to inquire and tour our unique arts complex nestled in Hanover.

New initiatives within the Emilson YMCA were also bubbling when this spring we created a new collaboration with the Gymnastics Department to create our first competitive Dance Team. Led by our professional dance and gymnastics faculty, Dance Team trains twice a week in both dance and gymnastics in our respective studios. For more information on joining Dance Team visit us here

Next week, we officially unveil summer! Laura's Center for the Arts welcomes hundreds of hungry campers for nine weeks of glorious artistic immersion in ArtsCamp 2016! This July we introduce the first of our two part summer program sessions on Saturdays and summer nights as we launch programming for all ages and abilities including relaxing paint nights on our outdoor stage.

ON THE STAGE

Our free concert series on the amphitheater kicked off this past Wednesday, June 15 with The Miller Street Barn Band hailing from the South Shore! An evening full of music spanning decades paid tribute to Buddy Holly, The Grateful Dead, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, and more. This talented six piece band smoothly weaved through each piece keeping the summer crowd entertained.

SAVE THE DATE: Pack a picnic and join us on Wednesday, July 20th as we jam with The Miller Street Barn Band once again. Free summer concerts are presented on our amphitheater stage.  Rain doesn't stop us as we move inside to our professional indoor theater.

WITH OUR COMMUNITY

Hanover Day - Youth Battle of the Bands

The South Shore YMCA Arts & Education team has joined forces with the Hanover Day Committee to create the Youth Battle of the Bands! This new element will bring middle school and high school students together on Hanover Day using music as their central focus.

On June 14th, our team hosted the preliminary round, hearing seven of the nine bands that will battle this Saturday. The evening was a beautiful testament to the power of music to bring people together. Not only did each group bring their 'A' game to the stage, but truly strong new relationships.  Hanover Day is full day event, on June 25th at Hanover's Sylvester Field, on Route 139. Join us at the first Battle of the Bands when they take the stage at 5:00 p.m. The undefeated band is awarded a final performance to kick-off the fireworks display. Visit Hanoverday.com for a schedule of events.

In celebration of Small Business Saturday, Laura's Center for the Arts is thrilled to announce Craftacular 2016 on Saturday, November 26th, from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

The Arts & Education staff and faculty have created quite the buzz within the South Shore YMCA community and in the arts scene around the South Shore. Our very own Assistant Director of Arts & Education, Tyler Cavanagh, will be playing one of his dream roles, Schroeder, in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown with the Bay Players of Duxbury. This show is a true testament to a small cast and crew working together to bring every aspect of this amazing show to life. In addition to performing on stage with the Bay Players, Tyler has worked on various technical elements with the group including lights and sound.
