A Word on Wellness: Shine On!

By Lisa Picha, School Psychologist
So often we may move through our routines and specific roles in a predictable and automatic way. For a school psychologist this often involves a focus on data, numbers, trends, scores and when required, crisis support. Most of these tasks have pretty straightforward procedures, well-researched materials and interventions, and goals. This got me thinking about some of the things that we do that are harder to operationalize, such as helping students "shine."
Several years ago there was an article in the National Association of School Psychologists Communique that talked about the ways that school psychologists can impact students within the broad school population. This reminds me of the great importance of each of us as individuals within our Park Tudor community. There are so many different roles and pieces necessary to make our environment thrive. Katherine Cowan and Andrea Cohn wrote, "A crucial component of building resilience in our students and school community is helping individuals see the real benefits that simple positive actions can have on themselves and others." We can support and strengthen our students by increasing the number of positive experiences they have each day.
Some of the helpful things we can all do to strengthen our connectedness, resilience, positive outlook and confidence can include simple acts of accepting ourselves and our children and the full range of qualities this brings. I really appreciate when I see how our community can model positive acts, stop and take time for everyday acts of kindness and care for others. "Today is a good day to shine!"
Keep sharing positive. Be grateful. Forgive. Accept others. Think kind thoughts. Love, celebrate and embrace differences. Laugh. Stop to make time for others. Give!

An Update on Monarch Butterflies
By Mark Dewart, Upper School Science Teacher
Birds are singing on campus when we arrive in the morning, one of the many signs that winter is ending here in Indiana. Warmer days have already reached the 12 forested mountain sites in Mexico where the entire eastern population of monarch butterflies has spent the winter. In early March, the migratory generation that flew to Mexico last fall is moving lower on the mountainsides and mating. During the second week in March the monarchs will start flying northeast from their fir forest overwintering sites. The great journey north will begin.
Park Tudor students and faculty have anticipated the arrival of the monarchs and already begun their second year of work to provide habitat for the butterflies. In January, the Lower School Panther Kids Care group used their nimble fingers and created packets of milkweed seeds and planting instructions that were distributed to 300 teachers who attended the Indiana Association of Independent Schools Conference at Park Tudor in February. This week, milkweed seedlings started emerging from planting trays in science labs on campus. These seedlings will grow to a height of 6 inches in the greenhouse. Then, when the danger of frost has passed, students will transplant the seedlings into prairie restoration areas at Stamm Park in Washington Township. In this second year of growing and planting milkweed, students will create maps that document the increase in milkweed stem counts at Stamm Park. The data students collect from campus milkweed plots will contribute to national studies that are trying to understand the effects of disease and predation on the milkweed insect community. This practical work to return monarchs to their former abundance gives Park Tudor students a wonderful opportunity to apply concepts and skills they have learned in math and science classes and experience the satisfaction of engaging and helping solve meaningful problems.

Lower School Panther Project Team Launches Book Drive
The Lower School Panther Project Team launched a March Book Drive in honor of Read Across America Day (March 2) at a Lower School assembly on Tuesday, March 1. Panther Project Team members will also present at the Hilbert Center community meeting this Friday. The drive will run through March 11 and bins have been placed in the two Lower School lobbies for collection.
All the books will be donated to two local food pantries. First Baptist Food Pantry has had a tradition of giving a book to any child or adult who is also there to pick up necessary food items. There is a new food pantry in our community, Crooked Creek Pantry (71st and Michigan) and they are beginning to also have a table with books each day the pantry is open (an initiative started by a Park Tudor parent, Alix Loewen). It is exciting to partner with both these organizations. All types of books (including gently used) are welcome, including picture books, early readers, chapter books, teen novels, adult novels, and nonfiction books.
