Young Maker Lab Hosts Maker Fair

The new Young Maker Lab at Park Tudor serves as a space for students to engage in a variety of hands-on, STEAM-focused projects, with guidance from Lower School Literacy Support and Media Specialist Nicole Cooreman. The class works to empower students to become confident creators and tinkerers who can design and collaborate on projects they are passionate about. Over the course of the session, students explore topics including coding, origami, duct tape design, bookmarking, engineering, electronics, and other STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) projects.

On Thursday, December 17, the Young Maker Lab invited parents, faculty and students to attend a Maker Fair and view their creations. The Maker Fair included 16 different exhibits, with the student creators on-hand to demonstrate their inventions and explain how each worked. The Fair also included a Maker Space area, where attendees could try their hand at making their own creation.

Seeking Board of Directors Nominations; Deadline is January 15, 2016

Friday, January 15, 2016 is the deadline to nominate potential board members to the Park Tudor Board of Directors beginning with the 2016-17 school year.

The Governance Committee of the Board is seeking candidates who possess strong leadership skills and strategic-thinking abilities, who have the ability to take a broader school view over their own self-interest, and who have demonstrated commitment to and/or involvement at Park Tudor. Candidates may include parents with children in the various divisions, alumni, non-parents, grandparents, local business leaders and educators.

Nominees will be considered for three-year terms beginning in July, 2016. The Governance Committee will conduct a review of all current board members in an effort to complement their skills with those of potential candidates who offer broad and specific skill-sets. The committee also will review and conduct an initial screening of all nominations received by the January 15 deadline; meet with a select number of nominees to further discuss the process in greater detail and to determine their interest; will prepare a short list of candidates for discussion by the Executive Committee of the board; and will prepare a final slate of candidates for recommendation to the full Board of Directors. The Board will vote on the final slate of directors and trustees at its May, 2016 meeting.

If you would like to nominate one or more candidates for consideration, please complete this online nomination form by Friday, January 15, 2016.
A Word on Wellness: Wellness for Our Students
By Sylvia Fleck, Director of Physical Education

Park Tudor Middle School physical education students have been participating in the Cooper Institute Fitgram Fitness Program for the last three years. The Fitgram program is a comprehensive fitness assessment battery for youth. It includes a variety of health-related physical fitness tests designed to score cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, muscular endurance and flexibility.

We just completed pre-testing Middle School physical education students and are impressed with the results. All girls and boys combined average scores landed into the "National Healthy Fitness Zone."

We will now concentrate on improving pre-test scores by setting individual improvement goals with the students. The physical education teachers and fitness trainer will provide movement activities and fitness training in class throughout the winter months. Post-testing assessments will occur in the spring.

The goal of our program is to help students understand that physical activity must be maintained over time in order to continue to provide lifetime health benefits.
Connecting Classroom, Campus and Community: Exploring Identity Through Advisory
By Sarah Webster, Director of the Upper School

Advisory is a long-standing tradition at Park Tudor that allows students and faculty time to connect outside of the classroom in an intentional way. Last spring, school leaders had the opportunity to attend a presentation by students about the positive impact of identity-themed conversations. After much reflection about Advisory and its impact on the Upper School, the leadership team focused its efforts on creating an Advisory curriculum that centers on identity development.

This summer, class deans Ryan Martin, Christian Jacobs, Inga Kahre, and Tom Page, developed the structure to facilitate exploring identity through Advisory. Using the school's core values as our guiding principles, we established our goals and statement of purpose:

Statement of Purpose: The Upper School Advisory Program, shaped by our institution's core values, offers a four-year, intentional curriculum that provides a foundation to cultivate supportive relationships as well as a sense of self. In anticipation of increasing academic rigor and social demands, activities focus on a student's overall well-being centered on academic, social, and emotional growth. Advisors will partner with advisees and families to promote a positive school culture and encourage inclusion and community stewardship. Our students will be well-known by the Park Tudor faculty as a result of a nurturing and mutually respectful environment.

Goals of Advisory:
  • Provide mindful guidance (formal and informal)
  • Develop self-awareness and advocacy
  • Encourage inclusion and community stewardship
  • Foster supportive relationships
  • Promote positive school culture
To help prepare for this new focus for Advisory, Upper School faculty received training during our opening of school professional development days. Rosetta Lee, an independent school educator and expert in the field of identity development, presented and led conversations relating our roles as teachers and advisors.

While in Advisory groups, students, mentored by faculty, are engaging in activities centered on building self-awareness and reliance as well as group rapport and camaraderie. Our activities include small group discussions and all-school assemblies. Early in the year, we welcomed guest speaker and Park Tudor parent, Dr. Lauren MacLean, to talk with students about ethics and academic integrity. In September, we celebrated Homecoming by decorating t-shirts with Lower School students. As the semester concluded, Student Council led the Upper School in the effort to connect with our larger Indianapolis community.  Using Penny Wars and Elves for Education, our students raised more than $1700 to support local families in need.

As the Advisory program continues to take form, the Class Deans and faculty will continue to partner on behalf of our students.

Throwback Thursday History: Gotta Dance!

When Ayres Auditorium was built in 1976, a dance studio was included in the design because, at the time of the merger, Tudor brought dance classes and activities to the curriculum. Park had not previously offered dance. Beginning as far back as the 1920's, there are descriptions of May Pole celebrations at Tudor that would have included a choreographed dance program. Later on in Tudor's history, a modern dance class was required of all girls at one time. Since the merger, Park Tudor has created more dance opportunities in the form of classes and co-curricular experiences, e.g., dancing in concerts and musicals as well as cultural experiences for classes.

Our first two TBT photos are of Tudor's Workshop Modern Dance Club for high school girls (1959) and Junior Workshop for middle school girls (1963). The last photo exemplifies the breadth of dance experiences in this 1986 shot of some dancin' Lower Schoolers at their holiday concert.
