A Word on Wellness: Staying Healthy... There's an App for That!

By Cynthia Pauszek, MSN, RN, CPNP
School Nurse and Coordinator of Nursing Services

With cold and flu season and holiday travel right around the corner, it's important to stay educated with up-to-date health information. Mobile apps can be a great and quick source of reference, but how do you find ones (among the thousands available) that are reliable and current?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one source of dependable information. Its website not only has mobile apps that can help you access important health information quickly, but also game apps that can be entertaining.

Listed below are several of the CDC's more popular apps designed for general consumer use. It's important to keep in mind that apps, even those that are up-to-date and reliable, are only one tool for staying well. For the diagnosis or treatment of any illness, make a doctor's appointment (NOT an app) your primary source of information.

Apps for Staying Healthy
·Features important health articles and prevention tips
·Link to CDC current news and information about infectious disease outbreaks
·Link to state specific information about seasonal flu trends and spread

Apps for Holiday Travel
·Includes country specific CDC vaccine recommendations along with helpful "Packing" and "To Do" checklists
·Link to CDC Travel Health Notices and U.S. State Department Alerts
·Answers what is likely safe to eat and drink in foreign countries in a few short and simple questions

Apps for Fun
·Game app which allows you to travel the world as a "disease detective" and solve outbreaks like the ones real-life CDC epidemiologists fight
·Game app that tests your health trivia knowledge

Connecting Classroom, Campus and Community: PT Sends Delegation to POCC and SDLC

Joyce Tucker By Joyce Tucker, Assistant Director of Admissions

This week, I am joining a large group of students and fellow faculty and staff as we head to Tampa for the People of Color Conference (POCC) and Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC). Opening ceremonies are this morning at 8:00 a.m.

Sponsored by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the theme of this year's conference is "Art, Science, Soul, and the Equity Imperative." The goal of the conferences is to help independent school professionals and students work toward greater equity and inclusion in our communities.

Students attending the SDLC are sophomores Shelby Hart and Naomi Jackson; juniors Ellie Dassow, TyraRose Nibbs and Maya Pasic; and senior Simon Hart. To be selected to attend, the students completed an application, an essay and an interview. The attendees were selected by a panel of faculty and staff from Lower, Middle and Upper Schools.

Faculty and staff attending POCC are Associate Head of School for External Affairs, Shants Hart; Upper School teacher and Interim Director of Diversity and Inclusion, Sven Dubie; Lower School Director, Mary McGonagle; Middle School Director, Scott McDougall; Lower School teachers Brandi Barnett and Jisung Chong; Lower School counselor Patti Duckworth; Middle School teacher Corey Pettigrew; Upper School teacher Spencer Summerville; Associate Director of College Guidance, François Médard; and myself.

We are looking forward to three days of workshops, guest speakers who are diversity leaders in their own fields, two special film screenings and affinity group gatherings. I am particularly eager to attend the film screening of Selma, The Bridge To The Ballot Box. This will be an important resource for teaching about the long struggle  to secure the vote for all citizens. According to the description, "This film intends to promote civic participation among students as it explores a vitally important era in our nation's history."

We hope that the students attending this conference will continue to be the "Change Agents" at Park Tudor. Diversity, multi-culturalism, equity and justice are all on the forefront of their charge. These Upper School students have also expressed the desire to carry their good works into the Middle and Lower schools in an age-appropriate manner, working closely with faculty.

We are looking forward to following their lead.

* Senior Isabel Keller's design has been selected to be the official MUNITY press corps sweatshirt for the 2016 International Model UN Conference at the Hague.

* Six students from Park Tudor were among more than 100 high school Latin students and their sponsors from across Indiana who attended the 38th annual Indiana Junior Classical League Fall Latin Day on November 14 at Purdue University. Fall Latin Day participants attended breakout sessions over topics such as Roman art and Roman performances, the Cursus Honorum and Roman propaganda, Roman games including the modern trivia game Certamen, Roman oratory, Roman elections, and spirit cheers. Purdue University Classical Studies professors presented additional sessions on Roman jars, freedom in ancient Rome, and Roman comedy and satire. Graduating seniors also attended a session on college and the Classics presented by members of the Senior Classical League, the college level of the organization. Park Tudor won the spirit competition over 10 other schools at the end of the day's activities. Pictured are August Dailey of Crown Point, IJCL president; seniors Pavani Peri, Kristina Altman, and Mark Rook; junior Hannah Resnick; sophomore Rohith Yeleti; freshman Cy Orentlicher; and Sarah McDaniels, Classics teacher and IJCL sponsor.

Lower School Supports Food Pantries

The Lower School and Hilbert Center supported two different pantries during their November Food Drive, run by our new Panther Project Team (formerly Student Council). Panther PT leaders gave a presentation about hunger at a Lower School assembly and other Panther PT members made signs and bins to collect the food. SK students counted and graphed their donations, as well.

As in the past, we collected donations for the First Baptist Community Pantry, a pantry we have a long-standing partnership with; in fact, every fifth grader has the opportunity to volunteer their time at this pantry. Additionally, our JK and SK families supported a newly opened pantry at IPS 34/Eleanor Skillen Elementary called Eleanor's Pantry. We have been working to develop a deeper partnership with IPS 34 over the past few months; they have been the recipients of our uniform drives in the spring for the past two years. About a year ago, the principal and social worker decided to open a food pantry at their school in an empty classroom because of a need they saw among their families.

Park Tudor families were incredibly generous, and we were able to fill First Baptist's truck with food and collected enough peanut butter, jelly and cereal to fill the pantry for the month of December at IPS 34. Additionally, Park Tudor faculty came together and bought flour, sugar and salt for the First Baptist pantry to help each family for the holiday baking season.
Fifth Graders Skype with Antarctica

Skype with Antarctica Researchers For the third year, Dr. Kathy Licht, Associate Professor at IUPUI in Earth Science, came to Park Tudor to speak to the fifth graders about her current research in Antarctica. This year she brought along a graduate student, Christine Kasaab, and they discussed their research and their upcoming trip to Antarctica.

As a follow up to this visit, the fifth graders were able to Skype Dr. Licht and her team on Tuesday, November 24 from McMurdo Station in Antarctica and have continued to follow them on Twitter. Fifth graders asked excellent questions to the scientists and mountaineer, and the students hope to continue to communicate with the research team while they are in the field for the next month.
