A Note from the Head of School
By Dr. Matthew D. Miller Welcome to all new and returning families! I hope that your summer was restful and productive, and that everyone is refreshed. I am excited to see both new and familiar faces on campus. As we start the new academic year, I want to take a moment to consider the important core value of respect - this will be a top theme for the year and a clear focus for many of our direct and indirect activities. View our core values here. While there were many incredible moments and accomplishments last year, over the summer the administrative team reflected on the past year and key moments across all divisions that did not feel consistent with our school or our values; in particular, the actions of a few of our graduating seniors were noticeably incongruent with our shared values and our community's common expectations. Without question, this was not how we wanted to end the year, and it raised concerns that had ramifications far beyond the actions themselves. In this sort of review, we cast the net widely, reviewing specific incidents and behaviors on campus for common themes, but also considering these conversations in the context of national trends, peer benchmarking and research in the field. After considerable reflection, the conclusion of our review is that the key theme again and again comes back to our core value of respect, including respect for self, respect for peers, and respect for the community we live and work in. Respect also has the broader connotation of understanding oneself and valuing others. When we fall short in any of these areas, our entire community suffers. This needs to be a clear and intentional focus for this year and beyond. While we cover numerous topics as an institution, I have asked my administrative team and the faculty to make respect the top theme for the year and to make this the clear focus our activities across all divisions in advisory, in assemblies and in all aspects of our work and play. This has always been central to our work at Park Tudor, and our Lower School program, as well as our Middle and Upper School advisories, will focus on and reinforce this theme. Moreover, our recent freshman and senior retreats paid particular attention to these ideas, most importantly establishing common expectations for the community - all with the understanding that together, we can make a wonderful school even better. Park Tudor has high standards and great respect for all members of our community. We recognize that the growth of our students and the success of our school is an ongoing, collaborative effort and that progress is not always linear. Success requires partnership, and as we begin the new school year, we ask that you partner with us in reinforcing and supporting our focus on respect and other core values. Together, we will help students accomplish great things.
I welcome your support in focusing our energies on respect and on making 2015-16 the most memorable school year ever!

Freshmen students have already been busy with their retreat on August 10-11, and will have their first day of school on Monday, August 17. Seniors have their retreat today and tomorrow, August 13-14. For all parents and students, the following information will be helpful as you prepare for the first day of school on Tuesday, August 18: * Specific information for the start of school is posted here on the Park Tudor website. * The Student/Parent Handbook is an important resource that contains extensive information about school policies and procedures. Please review it carefully. On pages 36-40 you will find the daily schedule and instructions for dropping off and picking up your child from school each day. Any new or updated information in this year's handbook is marked with an asterisk. To access the handbook, log into My BackPack and you will find it under "My Documents." * A complete school calendar listing all school events is available on the Park Tudor website. The online calendar can be customized to meet your family's individual needs - click on the "My Dynacal" feature on this online calendar to set up your customized calendars. * The Park Tudor Family Directory is now available online on My BackPack, and a printed booklet will be distributed after the start of school. Annual Survey Results Show Improvement in Key Areas
Thank you to all who completed the annual ISACS survey that we conducted last spring. Over the summer, the administrative team spent considerable time reviewing the data, including as a centerpiece of the agenda during our annual retreat. We appreciate feedback from all of our key constituents - parents, students, and faculty/staff - as we continually seek to enhance our school. The survey results were very positive, and showed improvement over 2014 in several areas. On our mission, for example, 78% of parents agree or strongly agree that Park Tudor's mission is widely known and endorsed, and 76% agree or strongly agree that the school's mission is achieved. Both of these areas showed a statistically significant increase over 2014. The survey also showed an increase in parents' rating of quality of education; in 2015, 83% of parents rated Park Tudor's quality of education as excellent or very good, compared to 79% in 2014. Specifically, academic departments, communications and administration/staff all registered year-over-year improvement in favorable ratings from parents. While much of the survey data showed an increase in parent satisfaction, the key loyalty measure - likelihood to recommend Park Tudor - did not change significantly from 2014, at 76%. This measure is below the ISACS benchmark, and continues to be an area of focus for the administrative team. To that end, as we review the areas that most positively impact parent opinions about Park Tudor, we will continue to focus efforts on supporting academic achievement, ensuring that students feel well-known, providing an innovative education, and fully achieving our mission. We will also continue to seek regular feedback. We are joining with a group of peer INDEX (Independent School Data Exchange) schools to pilot a parent survey in November that will allow us to benchmark Park Tudor against our peers in the area of parent satisfaction. This very brief survey will allow us to compare Park Tudor to numerous other top independent schools, including the Isidore Newman School, Holland Hall, the Chadwick School, and Pembroke Hill. And, we will once again implement the ISACS survey, moving it to February of 2016 to avoid the busy end-of-school year crunch and hopefully increase our response rate among parents. Surveys are just one method of soliciting feedback, and we encourage parents to reach out to the administrative team if there are specific areas you'd like to discuss. For questions about the ISACS survey results, please contact Cathy Chapelle, Director of Strategic Communications, at 415-2870 (cchapelle@parktudor.org).

Extraordinary Opportunity: New Spring Break Trip to the Galapagos Islands
The science department is sponsoring a trip to the Galapagos Islands, a place that all students were introduced to in Bio I because of its many unique species and relevance to the study of evolution. This 12-day trip will involve field work (Galapagos tortoise monitoring and highlands restoration), a cultural exchange with local students, and island exploration (snorkeling and encounters with local wildlife). Students will observe animals found nowhere else on Earth and explore secluded waters, and experience a location that very few get to see. * From July 5-9, Band Director Chuck Flowers participated in the Northwestern University Conducting Symposium. Participants came from all over world for this master class. Mr. Flowers conducted and played trombone in the class band, playing some of the finest repertoire in band literature. His biggest takeaways from the camp include exploring a deeper authenticity and intimate connection as a conductor with the ensemble, a renewed appreciation for the importance of in-depth study of musical scores, and an overall refreshed passion for making music with others. Mr. Flowers looks forward to sharing what he learned with his students this year.
