Students Work to Save Monarch Butterflies by Planting Milkweed
Upper School science teacher Mark Dewart is working with students to help save migratory monarch butterflies, which are approaching extinction due in large part to the elimination of milkweed in corn and soybean fields. Female monarch butterflies lay their eggs on milkweed, and monarch caterpillars feed on milkweed leaves after hatching; the toxins in milkweed help the caterpillars ward off predators.
Mark and his science students have started more than 1,000 milkweed plants from seed, as well as varieties of nectar plants that will help nourish the monarch butterflies as they make the 1,300 mile migration from southern Canada back to Mexico in the fall. Now, students are working to plant circular plots, 2-meters in diameter, in various locations around campus that will include both milkweed and nectar plants, in the hope of helping migratory monarchs replenish their numbers.
We also have milkweed plants available if you would like to plant some at your home; contact Mark Dewart (mdewart@parktudor.org) if you are interested.

E.E. Ford Grant Match Secured
We are pleased to announce that we have succeeded in matching and have secured the generous $50,000 grant that we received from the E.E. Ford Foundation to help fund the new Park Tudor Innovator's Institute program for this summer and beyond. The E.E. Ford Foundation awards grants to independent schools that hold membership in the National Association of Independent Schools.
Applications for the Innovators Institute are now being accepted. The program will offer students entering grades 9-12 the opportunity to learn the skills needed to be successful in college and beyond, while gaining experience to help them become leaders in their fields of interest. Students will learn how to think like innovators by cultivating skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, communication, and collaboration. Following a 3-day "Innovation Bootcamp," students can choose to focus on Design Thinking, Entrepreneurship, or Vex Robotics. Click here for more information and to apply.
We thank the E.E. Ford Foundation and all who donated to secure this generous grant!
