At Homecoming, the college welcomed its 10th president! After a beautiful inauguration, I find myself getting excited that I got to be a part of this historic moment for Luther. It's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day drudge, and forget about the amazing things that happen on this campus every day--not just an inauguration!  Just as this little squirrel is looking for nuts to survive the winter, this is also a time of hard work from students due to midterms. Once these are done, Fall Break is the best time for students to recharge their batteries. So happy Fall Break! Message from Corey Landstrom, vice president and dean for student life

Is it hard to believe Fall Break is here? For me it is somewhat hard to fathom. I am always amazed at how quickly the academic year appears to progress. Of course, time has not sped up but the sensation of time speeding up is real.

What does this mean for students? In listening to plans that members of the Student Senate shared this morning at their weekly meeting, I hear that some have a very clear, definitive plan: Sleep. Sleep. Sleep. For many of the students who are staying on campus or traveling home, sleep is a priority over the next several days. It does make me wonder, how can we help students think of sleep as a priority all the time? I have addressed sleep in previous newsletters and will simply add this: It is an essential, under-appreciated need for college students. READ MORE...

Spotlight On:
Safety and Security

At Luther, we take quality of life seriously and do our collective best to ensure a safe and welcoming environment. There are a collection of procedures and policies targeting campus safety.

In the event of emergency on campus, students can dial 2111 and/or 9-911. Numerous emergency phones are located in campus parking lots and at building entrances for use as needed.

The safety and security team has guidelines for how to respond to emergency situations that are made available to students, staff, and faculty. The team includes Bob Harri, director of campus safety and security, along with five security officers who help keep students safe.

Violence, in its many forms, has remained constant throughout history. Activists, educators, and leaders have sought to end violence through raising awareness. Jyoti Grewal received a Ph.D. from the Stony Brook University, New York, and is currently the dean of University College, Zayed University, United Arab Emirates. Grewal is actively involved in women's issues in the United States and South Asia.
