Despite the absence of the complete student body, Luther's campus is still buzzing with activity. As the faculty go through seminars and course planning, students are on the scene working to keep the campus beautiful and pursuing intellectual endeavors. Student researchers are participating in projects that will not only be published, but are also allowing them to gain invaluable experience. Other students are participating in summer seminars to continue learning throughout the break. It's a great time to be on campus and enjoy the beautiful weather, and the great community of Decorah. Message from Corey Landstrom, vice president and dean for student life

Spending a summer in their college town can be an amazing experience for students. Of the five institutions at which I have worked, four have been in communities of fewer than 8,000. Often, students have limited time during the academic year to explore and learn more about the community and its resources. Further, exploring the local region can be particularly challenging during the academic year. I have often spoken with students who have stayed during a summer about their experiences. They consistently report a deepened appreciation for the community. They explore, meet people and generally have a rewarding experience. The slower pace, the absence of significant academic commitments and general freedom from multiple distractions provides them an opportunity to learn more about what it means to be a member of their local community.

I am highlighting three Luther students who are spending their summer in Decorah. Each of their stories provides insight into how rich the experience can be. READ MORE...

Riding in his first Tour de France, Matthew "Flip" Busche, Luther College class of 2007, is excited for the opportunity and impressed by the start of the 101st "le Tour." "I'd be lying if I said the reception here in Yorkshire for the 'Grand Depart' wasn't impressive. I've never seen so many people lining the road. The noise has been deafening," Busche said after stage one of the Tour de France.

The Weston Noble Alumni Choir will gather in Decorah starting July 20 for its eighth reunion and concert.
