Leadership from the field

 What is your WHY?

Rereading Simon Sinek's book, Start with Why, got me thinking. What truly is my why at a very granular level? As a business owner? A consultant? A facilitator, teacher or speaker? What topics and activities engage me with my why? I decided to dig deeper than my roles and focus on a couple of topics that I speak on and use when working with clients.

For years I have delivered a speech to many groups titled, Balancing Your Professional and Personal Life. I've done this talk probably 100 times and it has never failed to connect with my audience regardless of their background, profession, age, gender or country of origin. It also never fails to reengage me and give me energy. I realize that this is because it connects deeply with my "why" and my core purpose.  It is a topic that I try to live every day.

Having been a graduate of and a facilitator for Covey's Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, I had ample opportunities to develop a mission statement or core purpose. A key part of my core purpose is to bring light, life, love and learning to all my roles and relationships. How do I do this? I use my gifts to bring forth the greatness in others through consulting, coaching, teaching, speaking and writing. This applies whether I am a consultant, a business partner, mom, a speaker or a business owner. So many of us struggle to keep balance in our lives and stay true to ourselves. I don't have an easy answer but I enjoy sharing what works for me and learning from those in the audience. Together we can find better ways (how and what) to stay true to ourselves meet our respective whys.

Another topic I have been researching informally for at least 20 years and formally for about 9 years as part of my doctoral studies and research is managing transitions. Specifically, my research explores how we can productively transition through the inevitable changes that affect all aspects of our lives. I remain in awe of people who can be subjected to endless, seemingly negative life changes and yet emerge stronger and wiser. As Daryl Connor noted in 1993 in his book, Managing at the Speed of Change, "The ability to successfully manage change has become one of the most important skills needed for personal happiness, the prosperity of organizations, and the health of the planet." I also know that as I teach and facilitate I learn more about the topic, myself and my deeper whys.

If my why is to bring light, life, love and learning to all my roles and clients, how can my research help my clients navigate change more productively and positively. How can I? What can we learn? What are your whys? Share your thoughts with me on my website or in response to this newsletter. Everyone who responds will be eligible for a free assessment and will be entered in a drawing for a phone charger. (Reply back with your email address and contact information.)

True transformational change is a product of highly effective communication, collaboration, trust and a clear vision of the desired future state. Jean Ann cleverly aligns the best tools and techniques together that drive reliable, sustainable change to our modern healthcare organizations. What I Am Reading

Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action - Simon Sinek

Though I read this book when it first came out, I am rereading it as it applies to my evolving roles as a consultant and business owner.  Even for the many of you who have previously read it, you'll find it worthwhile to reconnect with Sinek's material. https://youtu.be/IPYeCltXpxw

Why are some people and organizations more innovative, more influential, and more profitable than others? Why do some command greater loyalty from customers and employees alike? Even among the successful, why are so few able to repeat their success over and over?

People like Martin Luther King Jr., Steve Jobs, and the Wright Brothers might have little in common, but they all started with why. It was their natural ability to start with why that enabled them to inspire those around them and to achieve remarkable things.

In studying the leaders who've had the greatest influence in the world, Simon Sinek discovered that they all think, act, and communicate in the exact same way -- and it's the complete opposite of what everyone else does. Sinek calls this powerful idea The Golden Circle, and it provides a framework upon which organizations can be built, movements can be lead, and people can be inspired. And it all starts with WHY.

Any organization can explain what it does; some can explain how they do it; but very few can clearly articulate why. WHY is not money or profit-- those are always results. WHY does your organization exist? WHY does it do the things it does? WHY do customers really buy from one company or another? WHY are people loyal to some leaders, but not others?

Starting with WHY works in big business and small business, in the nonprofit world and in politics. Those who start with WHY never manipulate, they inspire. And the people who follow them don't do so because they have to; they follow because they want to.

Drawing on a wide range of real-life stories, Sinek weaves together a clear vision of what it truly takes to lead and inspire. This book is for anyone who wants to inspire others or who wants to find someone to inspire them.  (Summary from Amazon.com)
