A Kickstarter to
Food Education

As a continuation to last month's newsletter, I would like to share with you a light at the end of the
Laurie David

Film Producer, FED UP
tunnel: a great step forward in food education for our children. A fine film producer and a woman I greatly admire, Laurie David (An Inconvenient Truth) has produced another brilliant documentary, this one about food: FED UP.

Its message can save lives,
and we can all help.

Eating healthy is something that I believe in with all my heart. It has become so important to me! I am very lucky to be able to say that I have survived a devastating head injury. Because of the severity of my injuries, my team of highly skilled doctors
predicted that
I would never walk, talk, or think on my own. I can honestly say that one of the main reasons my brain is continuing to recover today, 23 years after my car accident, is because of the food that I put into my mouth.

Supplying my body with the support and tools it needs to accomplish such an impossible task, I have learned, is so very important. Cutting out sugar, and staying on an organic, whole food diet, have both been necessary components to becoming a new me. This is both a challenge and a learning experience beyond measure, but the rewards are spectacular as well!

Fed Up is a documentary on food education, aimed at children, parents, teachers and the rest of us. Like her earlier film, An Inconvenient Truth, this award-winning documentary addresses the issues head-on. Obesity is not a mysterious condition, but a direct result of what we are eating. The film presents not only the problem, but solutions.

Katie Couric narrates the film.Stephanie Soechtig is the director. Fed UP allows every American to learn, "the inconvenient truth" about the food we feed our children. Science shows that sugary foods prevent young children's brains from developing properly. Some predict that this may be the first generation of American children to live shorter lives than their parents. I am not alone in thinking there's still time to prove that prediction wrong.

There has been overwhelming response by parents and their children to this incredibly informative documentary. Many used the film to lobby their elected officials, school boards, and local businesses. Most inspiring for the creators, was to have an overwhelming number of concerned parents, educators & children that signed up for the Fed Up Challenge.

Over 65,000 people joined Katie, Laurie and the Fed Up team on a 10-day Challenge to go completely Sugar Free! Everyone who signed up for the challenge started by cutting sodas, other sweetened beverages, and foods that had ADDED sugars for 10 days. During the Fed Up challenge and beyond, they encourage eating real, fresh, whole foods, excluding all products that contain added sugar. The result was more than 65,000 people went sugar-free for 10 days. It's not nearly enough.

Still, change comes slowly. Laurie, Katie, and Stephanie promised themselves that they would not stop educating until every classroom in America had a copy of Fed Up. They believed that whatever success they had with the film wouldn't translate into lasting change until every teacher, student, and parent had the opportunity to see Fed Up. Only then might the public begin to have a voice to turn the tide on this childhood health epidemic.

The Jennifer Field Foundation will present Fed Up in New Hampshire this coming summer. We plan to rally our community to get this film into as many schools as possible to educate teachers, parents, and children about healthier food choices.

We'll kick off our own Sugar-Free Challenge and invite all of you to be a part of this exciting campaign.
