A Word from Rev. Ellen
When I was growing up I used to come home from school and watch Batman every afternoon. Sure, we knew a lot about Batman and Robin, off catching the bad guys and saving Gotham. It was only later that is occurred to me, "who was home paying the bills and cleaning the bathroom so that Wayne Manor functioned; so that Batman and Robin functioned?" It was Alfred Pennyworth - the loyal and tireless butler. I knew very little about this third member of the dynamic duo!
This week I will be preaching on a similar situation in the early church. The Apostles were off sharing the gospel and converting many people to Christ. Their shadows even had the power to heal. Meanwhile, the care of the Jewish and Gentile widows and orphans was backing up and the complaints were pouring in. There were so many complaints that the apostle's ministry was starting to suffer. They needed an Alfred Pennyworth. No truth be told, the Church needed more than one Alfred Pennyworth!
What did they do? The apostles looked around for people, like Alfred, who were gifted in serving. People who wouldn't be comfortable out in public, teaching as the apostles did. They needed followers of Jesus Christ who would feel comfortable, behind the scenes, serving the widows and orphans. They needed deacons.
How about you? What is your gift? Are you a teacher? Then the church needs you to teach. DO you like what my dad called "visiting"? Then the Nurture Committee needs you on their visitation team. The point is, God has given each church all of the people they need to do all of the things Christ has called his disciples to do; then and now. Problem is, we can hide from our giftedness and our call.
If Batman and Robin had to clean toilets, make dinner, and tidy up Wayne Manor they wouldn't have time to save Gotham. Bethpage is the same way. We need everyone to use the gifts God has given them so that the Church of Jesus Christ can join with His Spirit in saving the world.

Bring Your Cans this Sunday for the 1,000 Can Challenge
This Sunday, July 31st will be the last day to bring canned goods for the 1,000 Can Challenge! The 1,000 Can Challenge is a project being offered to area churches to raise 1,000 cans of food to support Cooperative Christian Ministry's summer food drive. During the summer, the struggle for children to find a meal gets even harder, as only one of seven students who receives a free or reduced price lunch during the school year will get lunch on a summer day. Canned food items we are collecting are pork & beans, corn, peas, and green beans. Thank you for your support!

BLOOD DRIVE at Bethpage - August 22nd
Community Blood Center of the Carolinas and Bethpage Presbyterian Church are having a community blood drive on Monday, August 22nd from 4:00 until 8:00 PM in the BPC Fellowship Hall. CBCC is an independent, locally-managed, non-profit community blood center. They subscribe to a community-based blood banking philosophy. That means community donors know that the blood they give stays in our community first - helping family members, friends and neighbors. Excess supply is shared with other communities when needed.

Consent Forms for Prayer Joys & Concerns and Social Media Content
As you know, the Nurture Committee developed a policy to encourage sharing prayer joys and concerns while still protecting the privacy of our members, families and friends. Bethpage also has a policy in place to protect your privacy on the church's web site, social media accounts and in printed material. If you have not given your consent for your name to be listed on the Prayer Joys & Concerns or for your picture to be included in church publications, and would like to do so, there are forms available outside the church office, in the narthex and on the church's web site. Thank you!
