A Word from Rev. Ellen
They devoted themselves to the Apostle's teaching to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and prayer. Acts 2:42
Devotion! It sounds like such a strange, old fashion thing. To devote yourself to someone means you have developed a feeling of strong love or loyalty: the qualities needed to be constant with the use of time, money, energy, etc., for a particular purpose - in this case to Jesus Christ. What are the things in your life that you have developed a strong love or loyalty to? Your family? Your hobbies? Maybe your home?
Of course all of these things are very good. The Lord has blessed you with people who love you. Each one of us has a roof over our heads. Each one of us are blessed with gifts of all sorts. So what is the problem? Simply put: it's not the things in your life, not the effort you expend, it is their place in your heart. What is wrong - your focus. Acts tells us, "They developed a strong love and loyalty to the apostle's teachings on Christ." They consistently used their time to know Christ FIRST, then fellowship (knowing one another as equal members of Christ's church), worshipping together and praying together. They changed their focus!
The point? Many of us know the story behind Game of Thrones or the Braves record this season better than we know Christ actively in our lives or even the person we pray next to each Sunday? I'm not here to shame; just to ask the question? Is our first devotion (love or loyalty) to Christ or to his people? What awe and joy are we sacrificing? Why would we accept second best? Acts chapter two shows us the way to "old fashion devotion" and the awe found in knowing Christ, sharing meals together, worship together and praying together. Acts 2 is pretty clear . . . being constant, devoted then (and I suspect even now) to these practices changed these disciples lives radically . . . the whole world and will even change each one of us! Be devoted to Christ!

1,000 Can Challenge to Benefit CCM's Summer Food Drive
More than one in four children in North Carolina struggle with hunger. During the summer, the struggle for children to find a meal gets even harder, as only one of seven students who receives a free or reduced price lunch during the school year will get lunch on any given summer day. To help combat that issue, Cooperative Christian Ministry will be holding a summer food drive. As part of this food drive, Bethpage Presbyterian Church has elected to participate in the 1,000 Can Challenge, a project being offered to area churches to raise 1,000 cans of food for CCM through their congregations. Canned food items we will be collecting are pork & beans, corn, peas, and green beans. Your food offering may be brought to the church any time through July 31st.
