A Word from Rev. Ellen
"For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."
What is it about this book we call the Bible? No book has ever been more mesmerizing to the human mind. People have died for it. People have hidden it when it was banned. People have saved parts of it when they couldn't afford a whole one or weren't allowed to have one at all. What is it?
As we take up our BELIEVE series again, we see that study of the Bible follows only worship and prayer in priority in the Christian life of faith. But what is it that makes it such a high priority to our faith? I believe it is that in its pages we see GOD! The sin that so compromises our view of God, as John Calvin puts it "is corrected," like glasses, by scripture's truth.
How? When we see Bartimaeus in Mark's tenth chapter, crying out, blindly running toward Jesus, unable to let him pass without the reality of his healing, our own blindness and brokenness sees and cries out, "Son of David, have mercy." When we hear the dawning recognition in Mary's cry, "Rabboni" on Easter morning, scripture helps us to consider whether we have seen the risen Lord in our own lives. When Peter blurts out, "You are the Christ the Son of the living God" our mouths voice his Lordship.
Bottom, line: the more we read/ study and absorb scripture's truths, the more we find ourselves in the Bible's pages, the more we realize, the active work of Christ's Holy Spirit, "alive and active, sharper than a double-edged sword," cutting away and freeing us from the cancer of sin, the more we realize we have been re-united, each of us, with the God of our creation, through Christ Jesus, the more we know that Scripture is that sure map that directs us back to Eden and God's perfect presence once more. In the pages of scripture we find ourselves home. Blessings, Rev. Ellen
