A Word from Rev. Ellen

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you peace as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." John 14:27

On this second week of Advent let us take some time to look at the peace that God offers all who believe. In the gospel of John, Jesus tells us that His peace is not like that of the world's. The world defines peace as a time of no conflict, when everyone is satisfied, everyone is happy. Is that what we are looking for as Christians too? There is a joke about a Sunday school teacher who asked the children just before she dismissed them to go to church, "And why is it necessary to be quiet in church?" Annie replied, "Because people are sleeping."
God never promised that his peace will bring restful, sleepy times. Scripture pronounces the opposite, "Sleeper's Awake!" Jesus' peace is one that passes all understanding. It is a peace that dwells with us, by the power of the Holy Spirit, in the midst of contented rest, physical exertion, in joy or concern.  Thomas Watson, Puritan pastor, theologian and a preacher once said of peace, "If God be our God, He will give us peace in trouble. When there is a storm without, He will make peace within. The world can create trouble in peace, but God can create peace in trouble."
Peace in trouble! Is that not what the whole world is looking for? Robert Murray McCheyne offers a powerful picture of "peace in Christ" that I pray will be helpful to you on this second week of Advent. He writes, "If I could hear Christ praying for me in the next room, I would not fear a million enemies. Yet distance makes no difference. He is praying for me." May we all know THIS Christ, THIS Emmanuel (God with us), HIS peace at all time, as he is seated next to God, our Father; praying for us when we know what to pray and especially when we don't.  Blessings, Rev. Ellen
