A Word from Rev. Ellen
Thanksgiving is on Thursday, November 26th this year. It has become a staple in the life of Americans. This year perhaps, it is more important than ever, what with the bombings in the Middle East and Europe, the demonstrations on many college campuses and the continuing financial instability. Yes, Thanksgiving is more important than ever this year because thanksgiving reminds us that God is still in control, that we still have more blessings in our lives than we have problems.
As you may know, it was President Lincoln who made Thanksgiving an official American Holiday, in a year and a time in our history, like this year, filled with strife and uncertainty. Here is an excerpt from his letter of October 3, 1863 worth reading and meditating on this week.
"The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever-watchful providence of Almighty God . . .
No human counsel hath devised, nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.
It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American people. I do, therefore, invite my fellow-citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a Day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens."
May God bless you as you gather around tables this Thanksgiving.
Rev. Ellen

A Thank You Note from CVAN
Dear Friends at Bethpage Presbyterian Church,
Thank you so much for your generous gift of paper products and cleaning supplies through your drive for the Shelter! Your commitment to battered women and children truly makes an impact in their lives and in our community. We are grateful for what we have accomplished together through our many services. Just last year we provided 6,130 nights of shelter, answered 1,647 calls on our 24-hour hotline and our Teen Domestic Violence Classes reached 755 teens. Your generosity helps us to continue the path of providing safety, shelter and hope to families in our community. Thank you!
