A Personal God
This Sunday we embark on week-two of our Believe Series with the topic:  Personal Relationship with God.  I thought this week I would share a devotion from "My Utmost for His Highest" on how vital our personal relationship is for the viability of long term faithfulness to God's call in our lives.  ("My Utmost for His Highest" is a classic devotional guide by Oswald Chambers I have been using for over 25 years.)  Enjoy!

"And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile,
go with him two."   Matthew 5:41

The summing up of Our Lord's teaching is that the relationship which He demands is an impossible one unless He has done a supernatural work in us. Jesus Christ demands that there be not the slightest trace of resentment even suppressed in the heart of a disciple when he meets with tyranny and injustice.  No enthusiasm will ever stand the strain that Jesus Christ will put upon His worker, only one thing will, and that is a personal relationship to Himself which has gone through the mill of His spring-cleaning until there is only one purpose left - I am here for God to send me where He will.  Every other thing may get fogged, but this relationship to Jesus Christ must never be.
The Sermon on the Mount is not an ideal, it is a statement of what will happen in me when Jesus Christ has altered my disposition and put in a disposition like His own.  Jesus Christ is the only One Who can fulfill the Sermon on the Mount.
If we are to be disciples of Jesus, we must he made disciples supernaturally; as long as we have the dead set purpose of being disciples we may be sure we are not.  "I have chosen you."   That is the way the grace of God begins.  It is a constraint we cannot get away from; we can disobey it, but we cannot generate it.  The drawing is done by the supernatural grace of God, and we never can trace where His work begins.  Our Lord's making of a disciple is supernatural.  He does not build on any natural capacity at all.  God does not ask us to do the things that are easy to us naturally; He only asks us to do the things we are perfectly fitted to do by His grace, and the cross will come along that line always.
Blessings, Ellen

Autumn Vegetable Chowder Recipe
Steve Gaskey asked that the recipe for the soup fixed for a recent Wednesday evening supper be placed in The Beth Page due to poplar demand!  The recipe is from the book Meet Me at the Orange Blossom by Henry and Michal Schliff.  Here it is!
Autumn Vegetable Chowder is the most requested soup at the Orange Blossom.  It is served year-round, simply changing the name of the vegetables to suit the season.  A note of caution in serving the soup; it tends to curdle if it is kept over too high heat for very long, so it is best to serve it as soon as possible after heating.
6 tablespoons butter
1½  cups diced white onion
½ cup minced scallion
1 cup diced sweet red pepper
1 zucchini, diced
2 carrots, peeled & diced
4 baking potatoes, peeled & diced
1 tablespoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
2 cups water
5 cups mile
2 cups half-and-half
2 tablespoons flour
3 cups frozen corn
1 cup frozen sliced okra
1 cup frozen sugar snaps
2 cups grated Mexican Velveeta cheese
paprika
In a large heavy bottomed pot, combine the butter, onion, scallions, red pepper, zucchini, carrots, potatoes, water, salt and pepper.  Bring to the boil, reduce heat, and simmer, partially covered, until the potatoes are barely tender.  In a separate saucepan, combine the half-and-half with four cups of milk and heat until almost boiling.  Whisk together the flour and remaining cup of milk and whisk into the hot liquid.  Whisk the mixture to the boil and add the corn, okra, and sugar snaps.  Return to the boil and add to the potato mixture.  Stir everything together over moderate heat and bring almost to the boil.  Remove from the heat and stir in the cheese.  Sprinkle with paprika and serve.
