A Word from Rev. Ellen

One meeting can make the difference between life and death. There are moments of time for appointment, we put these moments on our calendars, in our cell phones, sometimes running red lights to get to these appointed moments on time. These are moments of chronological time and we mark our lives by their movement. But there are other measures of time, moments I call heavy time, the Greeks called Kairos. These moments hold deeper import than regular time. If they are missed or not spent well, whole lives, worlds, even worlds to come can be lost.

Such is the case in our text from the book of Galatians this Sunday. In our text, Paul is recounting a meeting with the apostles in Jerusalem where the requirements of salvation will be clarified. Salvation was by faith in Jesus Christ's life death and resurrection alone. Yet the Apostles, all Jewish in background, were going back to their Jewish customs and encouraging their followers to do the same. The unspoken message was, to be a follower of Jesus Christ you had to become Jewish. That wasn't Jesus' Gospel message and the faith was teetering on the brink of crisis. It was a Kairos moment for the future of the whole church.

This Sunday is not only Father's day at Bethpage, but our very own Kairos moment as we ordain three new elders, (Matthew Josey, Douglas Kirkman and Sherry Childers) and install two others (Joyce Deal and Eric McKnight.) How is this Kairos you may ask? We ordain and install every year in June. Yes, we do, but this year we will do something that very few churches our size will be able to do, we will ordain three out of five elders under the age of forty! With their ordination comes the sign of the ongoing future of Bethpage Presbyterian Church.

How will this kairos moment effect Bethpage for years to come? I do not know exactly? But one thing I do know for sure is that this ordination says, "Just like that moment in Jerusalem so long ago, Bethpage trusts our present and our future leadership to the saving work of Jesus Christ then and the Holy Spirit now." We trust the training these elders have had up throughout the years and the faith they exhibit today. In them, we see our church's future, writ large! On Sunday, our congregation will testify to God's faithfulness yesterday, today and as a result of these ordinations, in the tomorrow yet to come! THIS IS A KAIROS MOMENT! Blessings! Rev. Ellen

Father's Day Offering for Children's Hope Alliance

Two of North Carolina's most historic and prominent child welfare organizations have teamed up and now fall under a new umbrella name. In April 2014, Barium Springs and Grandfather Home for Children merged, making the combined agency one of the largest child service providers in North Carolina. Over the past year, Barium Springs and Grandfather Home operated together, but under two separate names. On March 30, 2015, the two agencies began operating as one cohesive organization under the name "Children's Hope Alliance." Bethpage PC has supported both of these organizations for many years. Forty percent of our Pentecost Offering is sent to Barium Springs each year. We will receive our Father's Day Offering for Grandfather Home Campus of Children's Hope Alliance (formerly known as Grandfather Home for Children) this Sunday, June 21st at the 9:55 AM worship service.
