Pay Attention to the Ripple Effect
|
The decisions you make and the actions you take affect those around you. Rehoboam learned that lesson the hard way. Rehoboam followed his father Solomon to the throne of Israel. Solomon had exacted harsh labor on the people. A delegation, led by Jeroboam, went to the new king and asked him to take away the harshness.
In private, Rehoboam asked his elder council what he should do. They advised that he become a servant to the people, lighten their load, and the people would always be faithful servants to the king. His circle of younger friends gave him just the opposite advice. They told him to work the people harder.
He listened to his friends - took the wrong advice and wound up with a divided kingdom.
At one time or another all of us are impacted by someone else's decisions or actions. When we suffer the negative consequences of another's wrongheaded decision, God can redeem the situation. Although Rehoboam wound up ruling only two tribes-Judah and Benjamin (as opposed to Jeroboam's rule over ten tribes)-it was through Judah that Jesus came to us; proving that God can redeem any situation!
We should always consider how our decisions and actions affect those around us. You can make a difference. Obedient to God's will for us, we are more "powerful" than any one of us thinks they are - no matter the station in life you inhabit.
Rehoboam made a bad decision, but it was really his father Solomon's actions that divided the kingdom. After all, it was Solomon who forsook the one true God and chased after other "gods," neglecting to serve the people and forcing them to work harder. Solomon wasn't too wise after all because he was focused on himself, as reflected in his 700 wives, his gold, and horses; all of which were in direct disobedience to God's counsel.
His son Rehoboam was merely living out consequence of those decisions and actions. Can we learn from Solomon's mistake by loving God first, loving others second, even those that do not yet know God? People are watching you know! You will be surprised to see how far the ripple effect of your good example can travel. Blessings, Rev. Ellen

A Thank You Note from Jean and Jo Brown
|
To Our Bethpage Family,
My sister and I thank everyone in our Bethpage Presbyterian Church family for the kindness and sympathy you all gave us this past week. We are never ready for that separation, no matter how much "warning" we might have. We are sad to be left behind, but grateful for all of your affection that made our goodbye easier to bear. We know that she has gone to be with her Lord and Savior, and with the others of her family who have left us for their Home in glory. I know that mama would say to you all, "Thank you for your prayers, your love, and your support." We know that we walk on, holding God's hand, while mama holds God's other hand, so the separation is both narrow and temporary. Thank you for walking with us.
In Christian love, Jean and Jo Brown
