The Home God Wants for His Presence

What a privilege. God tells Moses that he wants to come to his people and dwell right in the middle of their camp. Not on the outskirts. But right in the middle of where they were living. You might wonder, "What preparations would a people need to make for God to live in their midst?" God anticipated the question and told Moses what needed to be in place for his coming.

First, he wanted to be close to them but the problem of sin created a breach between them. So, God instructed Moses to institute the practice of sacrificing; offering another's life for the people's indiscretions before a Holy God. Sin is serious stuff, not to be taken lightly, and the sacrifice of unblemished animals was necessary to give the people a picture of sins cost.

Second, he wanted to stay close to them. Moses was directed to build a Tabernacle or tent, a portable place of worship where God could dwell, right in the middle of where his people dwelt. God wanted to be close to his people and for them to be close to each other.

Third, God gave his people the Ten Commandments concerning relationships. The first four commandments directed them on how to love God. The second set of six were to show us how to love other people. God did this so that when they sought to live by these commands, other nations would see them as different and know that they were God's people. God gave us Jesus too so that, when we live likehim, others will know that we are his people.

Could it be then that the degree to which we are obedient to him in this command to love each other, is the degree of his presence we will find among us? I think so! Blessings,Rev. Ellen

Pastor Appreciation Day - October 12th

October is Pastor Appreciation Month and October 12, 2014 is Pastor Appreciation Day. Pastor Appreciation should be more than just a designated event on the calendar. Churches and congregations should honor and encourage pastors throughout the year.

Clergy Appreciation Month began in 1992 as a way to encourage congregations to show their appreciation, love and support for their pastors. This affirmation can provide new life and energy for a pastor who may be dealing with burnout, disillusionment, frustration, isolation, or stress. Because pastors are often "on call" around the clock, special recognition for the work they do is more than called for.

This Sunday, please let Rev. Ellen know just how much we appreciate her work in our church, in our community, and the blessing she has been to Bethpage.  Thank you, Rev. Ellen!

      P
astor Appreciation Day/Month is a great opportunity for individuals and the church, as a whole, to show love and appreciation for their pastor. Using tangible "thank you" ideas to express gratitude is a special way to honor the clergy and thank their devoted family members. Here are some suggestions to put to use during pastor appreciation month.

  1. Pray for your pastor.  This may be the single most important and meaningful thing any congregation or member of a congregation may do for their pastor.
  2. Creatively communicate words of encouragement to your pastor for his or her service to God and the Church.
  3. Take special care to listen and respond to your pastor's sermons.
  4. Send the pastor a gift basket which includes thoughtful gifts for your pastor's kids (or pets) and your pastor's spouse.
  5. Surprise your pastor and spouse with a gift card to a special restaurant you've heard them talk about.
  6. Invite them to a dinner or party with your family and friends.
