When You Are Walled In, Look for the Way Out

Recently I read an article about Moses and the Hebrew Exodus. It asked, is there a wall in front of you? Behind you, is there a past you are running from? Beyond the wall are you waiting for the promise of a new life? If so, are you frozen in place because the "wall" is in your way? Do you feel frustrated, without hope? Good questions! Hard questions!

Just ask the Hebrew people, because this kind of situation is where they experienced some of God's finest work. Behind them was a life of back-breaking work and slavery, ahead of them, the life God promised them in obedience to God's call. At this very moment, they were pursued by the fierce army of Pharaoh and their only escape was literally a wall of water.

What is your "wall"? Fear of failure? A lack of confidence? Or have too many problems begun to pile up in front of you all at once? I know when that happens I often have no clue which one to tackle first. When this happens, some people panic, some start to look outside themselves for their help - or blame!

The Hebrew people began to blame someone - Moses. Have you done the same? Blame the boss. Blame a co-worker. Blame your dog. Blame yourself? Blame GOD? But Moses didn't play the blame game. He looked to God. (God loves it when his people look to him!) God heard Moses' cry and opened an unlikely route through the wall of water. He provided an Exodus, straight through the Red Sea.

Did you know that "Exodus" literally means "the way out." Moses reminds us that in God's grace the way out is not a better plan, a different leader, a better wife or a victim mentality. No, the way out is God - Everytime! Next time you're up against a wall look to him. He will make a way for you - he promised to! Blessings, Rev. Ellen

Preaching This Sunday - October 5th

This Sunday, October 5th, we are privileged to have The Reverend Sergio Schmidt and Mrs. Carla Schmidt preaching at our 9:55 AM worship service. Sergio was born in Argentina of German grandparents and grew up a strong Christian. He left his hometown to study theology at the age of 19 and after completing his studies at the age of 25, in 1994,  he wedded Carla, whom he had met at the theology university. Carla was born in Florence, Italy. Her father's family was from Florence, Italy and her mother's family from Rome, Georgia!  She had been confirmed in the Anglican Church,  studied Christian Education and later Translation and taught English in the towns where they lived. Three days after their wedding, they moved to Asuncion, Paraguay where Sergio had been stationed to Pastor a Church and a Childrenīs Home for the poor.  They later worked together in different Lutheran congregations of Paraguay and Argentina and had two children, Stephan and Victoria. Sergio and Carla moved to the USA in 2007, where Carla has her maternal grandparents, for Carla to spend time with her grandmother with Alzheimer's and for Sergio to complete his investigation on the Gospel of John for his PhD studies. The Gospel of John has been his lifelong passion. Carla loves to bake and help out in the church. They both have been homeschooling their children since 2009.  They feel privileged and honored that God has now called them to work in Hispanic missions in the PC(USA) with Bethpage Presbyterian Church. We welcome Sergio and Carla to our morning worship service at Bethpage Presbyterian Church!
