Trading In Your Dreams for Another's

As I approached mid-life I started to make some startling and unexpected observations. I had dreamed such big dreams when I was younger. The twenties, thirties and forties moved so fast. But now in my fifties, I know beyond a doubt that some of my dreams will never come true. That observation can throw some people into a mid-life crisis. Some just give up. Some have run into so much trouble along the way that they have become weary and chosen to settle for less. Still others may decide to trade one dream in for another.

That's what Joseph did. Talk about a dreamer and the name Joseph is bound to come up. At seventeen he dreamed his ten older brothers would bow down to him. He not only dreamed it, HE WAS FOOLISH ENOUGH TO tell his brothers about it. Now his brothers already had issues with him and he should have known better and kept his mouth shut. After all he was his father's favorite and the gift of that valuable, multi-colored coat hadn't made the jealousy his brothers were feeling any better. Today it would be like giving him a new iPhone 6 while the other siblings got a roll of quarters and a map to a pay phone. Are there pay phones anymore?

No wonder his brothers banded together and tossed the "dreamer" into a ditch, eventually selling him into slavery at the first opportunity. THAT WASN'T IN HIS DREAM. Nor was waking up in Egypt a slave or being in charge of an Egyptian official's house or prison, being in charge or called to interpret the leader's dreams. What a roller coaster ride of ups and downs.

But isn't that just how God works! Sometimes life is up and sometimes it is down, I mean way down. But in every time, God is with us and God has a plan for our lives. If Joseph had not gone through all he went through he would not have been in a position to save his family from starvation or bring them to Egypt, to work some of the most fertile land in the world.

Joseph could have lost hope and missed the whole point of his life. Instead he chose a better story - God's story for his life and because of it Hebrews became Israelites then Jews and out of that people, Jesus Christ, God's Son and our salvation.

Is your life's dream stalled? Look to God. Is the dream not what you thought it would be? Look to God. He may have a new dream for you - but reaching the last one was needed to get to the next dream God has for your life. Nothing is wasted. Live into the highs and lows of life and just like Joseph; you'll have a chapter in God's story to tell.
