The Story - Chapter 2, God Builds a Nation
|
This week in The Story we are reading about Abraham. What an amazing man he was! How many people do you know who, hearing a God they did not know, would take their whole family, move them hundreds of miles from home and establish a whole new religion?
Like us Abram, turned Abraham by God's covenant, was a guy of strengths and weaknesses. We need only think about the way he treated his nephew Lot or the willingness to give his only son to God as a sacrifice to know he was a true man of God. Yet, I am comforted by his human struggle with sin. Knowing that he too struggled with trusting God when he allowed himself to be talked into having a child with his servant (even after God had promised a son) or when, out of fear, he tried to pass his wife off as his sister to Pharaoh.
Why? Because his struggle with faith and God's faithfulness is a lesson to all of us who struggle with our doubts, yet seek to live lives of faithfulness. Do you have a situation in your life where you have been faithful, and it has been a long time since you have felt God's salvific hope? Then Abraham, the father of many nations, is your man. Maybe the greatest gift Abraham offers us is the example of radical relationship with God, radical faithfulness in the absence of all evidence and the stunning legacy God's faithfulness in Abraham's life offers us.
Blessings, Rev. Ellen
