NEWS FOR THE WEEK OF JUNE 29, 2014
A Word from Rev. Ellen - Good Reading This Summer

When I was a campus minister, I spent a summer at Ocean City, New Jersey. Each day I had two hours in the late morning to myself. I'd walk down the boardwalk, set my chair up where the beach met the water and read a good book. Ever since then, this sun kissed picture has been my summer icon. What means summer to you?

Beach and books! A classic combination. This summer I have been immersing myself in of that combo - a good book. What am I reading? THE Good Book! The Bible. It means some pretty intensive reading, but really illuminating! Reading 10 to 15 chapters a day, I have been blessed by the wisdom, the encouragement and the never changing character of God, chronicled in the Bible's pages.

Ernest is preaching this week on the Presbyterian tradition of the priesthood of all believers. Reading the Bible, Ernest's preaching; all these things remind me of the Presbyterian tradition of solo scriptura - life led and fed by scripture alone. Why even our denomination's name comes from the book of Acts, presbyteros - elder.

My summer wish: that I will live my life reading this great book over and over again, immersing myself in God's wisdom and coming to know the Word made Flesh through the Holy Spirit's illumination in scripture. I know that this goal is shared by many of you. I cannot think of a better way to pass this summer, fall, winter and spring. Perhaps this summer's reading experience will replace the sunny icon of ocean beaches and books as my new definition of summer? God bless you all. May God allow this summer to be a time when all of us find a new season of blessing and growth in the Lord.  Blessings, Rev. Ellen
