General Liability Insurance Now Required for Licensed Builders and Remodelers

Builders and remodelers that are licensed by the Mississippi State Board of Contractors will now be required to show proof of general liability insurance to obtain a license.  Last legislative session, HBAM was successful in lobbying the legislature and Governor to approve legislation allowing the Board to take this action.

The Board took the action to require the general liability insurance last fall, and exhausted the public notice rules as required on a new policy being implemented.  There is no minimum limit on the policy, but the insured will be required to have the State Board of Contractors noticed on the policy in case of cancellation of the insurance policy.

The effective date of the rule was January 25, 2013.  All residential builders and remodelers will be required to show proof of general liability insurance after January 25, 2013.

HBAM Encouraging Members to Join Us at the State Capitol

In conjunction with our Winter Board of Directors meeting on Thursday, February 14, HBAM will be encouraging our membership to join us at the State Capitol.  There are always important legislative issues, and we want our members to have the opportunity to communicate with their elected officials first hand.  By taking our message directly to the Capitol, we will have a better chance of getting our message to the lawmakers.  We will be gathering under the State Capitol rotunda at 9:00 a.m. on February 14th.  Parking is available on the corner of President and High Streets.

Dues Increase Passed by NAHB Board of Directors

Dues Increase begins January 1, 2014

The NAHB Board of Directors voted to increase the national dues beginning January 1, 2014.  The $16 increase will be applied for the next three years.  The $16 increase in 2017 will be implemented only if NAHB does not reach target levels of 156,000 members and 525,000 square feet of exhibit space sales in 2016.

According to NAHB, the dues increase is needed due to the loss in membership and decreasing non-dues revenue derived from the International Builders Show.   Being a federation, a portion of dues collected paid to the local Association goes to NAHB.  The current dues to NAHB are $150.
