Legislators of the Year Chosen for 2012

Senator Chris Massey of Nesbit and Representative Charles Busby of Pascagoula have been selected as the 2012 Legislators of the Year by HBAM.  Both Senator Massey and Representative Busby are freshman legislators, but you would not have known this with their work last year.

HBAM had two legislative priorities and Senator Massey and Representative Busby were instrumental in their passage.

Legislative Session Begins

The Mississippi Legislature will begin the 2013 session on Tuesday, January 8 at 12 noon. The opening day is set by the Mississippi Constitution which calls for the session to begin the first Tuesday after the first Monday of the year.   State lawmakers will be in Jackson for 90 days, which is also set by the Constitution.  Lt. Governor Tate Reeves and Speaker of the House Philip Gunn begin their second session after both were newly elected.   Legislators will focus on education issues such as charter schools and face a challenging budget again.  With the accomplishments of the HBAM during the 2012 session, we are not pursuing any changes to the licensing law for the first time in many years.  However, we do expect to see several bills introduced that deal with building codes where we will be playing close attention. Additionally, HBAM plans to be active on efforts to pass a premises liability law that would be helpful to business owners.

Applications Now Being Accepted for the Mississippi Housing Hall of Fame

The Mississippi Housing Hall of Fame was created to recognize those individuals who have made significant and lasting contributions to housing in Mississippi, the building industry and HBAM. This is the highest honor given to an individual for lifetime achievement in the housing industry. Candidates are selected from three categories: builder/developer, government and housing related. If you or your association would like to nominate an individual, go to www.hbam.com to download an application.
