| Mr. Ben Turner, Principal Ryan Caufman and US Representative Scott Perry
|
As part of the Student-Police Partnership Program, the students in Miss Erin Walker's Law class at CYHS had a presentation by US Congressman Scott Perry on April 24th. Congressman Perry, a US Representative, represents District 4 in Pennsylvania, which includes the Central York School District. Perry gave a brief synopsis of the things he was currently working on such as the Balanced Budget Bill. He also answered student questions about ISIS, the Keystone Pipeline, and college prices among other things. His message to students was to know their rights and their Constitution and to recognize their individual accountability as U.S. Citizens. He emphasized, "State your opinion, be heard," and invited students to speak to their local officials, himself included, about how they wanted their government to be run. Students gave positive feedback after the presentation about Perry's engaging words and advice. Senior Paul Berry (Arts and Humanities Academy), who attended the presentation stated "I wish I had the opportunity to ask questions of more elected public officials. I enjoyed having the opportunity to talk to him directly" Law is a required course within the Public Service strand of the Health Sciences and Human Services Academy. Throughout the Partnership program, students have had weekly opportunities to engage and discuss with community representatives of the public sector and the criminal justice field and related entities. Students have had State Senators and Representatives present, as well as many police officers, a representative from Probation Services, the Coroners office, and the York County Heroin Taskforce. Students have also attended various field trips : to the York County Courthouse to view a criminal trial, to the York County Emergency Management Center (911 center and emergency management), the York County Prison, and to the Springettsbury Township Police Headquarters. Senior Brandon Linker, Health Sciences and Human services Academy (Public Service Strand), who plans to become a law enforcement officer following graduation had this to say. "The Police Partnership Program is not only real life and useful for the students, it also gives law enforcement officials a better understanding of youth. We are building relationships and feel comfortable asking each other questions"

Important Information for the Class of 2015 regarding final grades and transcripts:
Seniors must indicate in their Parchment accounts, which college/university they plan to attend in order for their final transcripts to be sent after graduation. It is your responsibility, and not that of the CYHS Guidance Office, to make sure that your final transcript has been received by the college/university you plan to attend. If your schools' orientation program is in early June, there is a good chance that your final transcript will not be available before you attend the program and/or register for classes. We recommend that you contact your college/university to address this issue before you attend the orientation program. If you have taken dual enrollment or College in the High School classes, you must contact the college/university you attended in order to have your final grades sent to the school you plan to attend. The CYHS Guidance office will not do this for you.
PLEASE NOTE:In an effort to honor our students for their complete academic career, Central York High School will continue the tradition of announcing the Valedictorian and Salutatorian during the graduation ceremony. The students who have earned valedictorian and salutatorian will be notified following the calculation of final GPA's to ensure they have time to write their graduation speeches. |

CENTRAL YORK HIGH SCHOOL TO PARTICIPATE IN "MOVE THE PRIDE" PROGRAM THIS JUNE
We are excited to announce that Central York High School will participate in the "Move the Pride" program this school year.
Move the Pride is a program through which ALL K-11 learners will have an opportunity to visit their new, 2015-2016
classrooms or schools - and meet their new teachers and classmates - before the end of the 2014-2015 school year.
We believe Move the Pride will benefit our District's students, families, faculty and staff by:
· Building relationships before the new school year begins (learners, teachers and classmates)
· Easing student and parent/guardian anxiety over the summer months
· Allowing teachers to "hit the ground running" at the start of a new school year.
At the high school level, we believe the Move the Pride program will reduce the need for student schedule changes within the first month of the upcoming school year. Students will know their schedules in advance and have ample time to work with counselors to make any needed changes before the new school year begins. This will lead to a smoother start of school for students, families, faculty and staff.
How it works
In the past, your student's schedules were mailed home in early August. This year, you will receive your student's schedule for the next school year in early June. In addition, high school learners will have the opportunity to meet with his or her teachers and new classmates during a special Move the Pride day on June 10, 2015.
Have you done this before?
Yes! Stony Brook Elementary School piloted this program at the end of the 2014-2015 school year for its students and teachers entering Grades 1-3 in August 2015. The program was a great success for students, faculty and families, and we receive many positive comments from parents/guardians about its benefits for their children.
What's next?
We are working on scheduling assignments for the 2015-2016 school year now through the end of May, as well as planning for the June 10 "Move the Pride" day. We will send you another update with more information on the logistics of the June 10 day in May. You will receive your student's schedule and another update on the June 10 schedule the first week of June.
We are very excited to share this program with ALL of our students and families, and look forward to being part of the "Move the Pride" program this June. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our office at any time. You can also view more information on the Move the Pride program on our District website homepage, at www.cysd.k12.pa.us.

FRENCH HONOR SOCIETY
DIVERSITY CELEBRATION
& FUN FRIDAY
The CYHS French Honor Society and French Club shared French food and crafts at two district events recently. On Wednesday evening, April 22 nd, community members attending the 9 th annual Diversity Celebration had the opportunity to taste "pain au chocolat," a common French pastry, and crêpes freshly made by members of these organizations. The crêpes could be filled with Nutella™ or strawberry jam and topped with whipped cream and powdered sugar. Additionally, French Honor Society and French club members were on hand at the Celebration to help kids create a unique paper mosaic French flag, and paper berets were available for the "wee ones." These crafts were courtesy of the very creative mind of senior French student, Hannah Bartkowski. On Friday afternoon, April 24 th, French club members again shared freshly made crepes with 7 th and 8 th graders at the French-themed "Fun Friday" event. After satisfying their sweet tooth, many students continued their French experience by staying to create a mosaic French flag, to take silly pictures of friends with their faces in a cut-out Mona Lisa, or to simply listen to French music and check out pictures of high school French activities. Students could also take pictures in a more formal setting complete with berets and a French flag/Eiffel tower background. Both events were great opportunities for French students to share their enthusiasm for the language and culture while providing treats and fun to district students and the community. The advisor to the French Honor Society and French club is high school French teacher, Lori Jacobs. She would like to thank all the students who helped both at the events and with the great deal of preparation in the weeks before the events. Success would not have been possible without all of their help! |
UNIQUE ART ON DISPLAY
If you walk thru the CYHS Atrium and look up you just might see this unique piece of artwork created by Ms. Barb Wilke's Drawing and Painting Class.
This unique artwork was created by having each student sit with a bright light on one side of their face to get a high contrast photo. The photo was then manipulated for more contrast and cropped to get a close up of just the face. The drawing was made over the image moving the grays to either a positive or negative area. All this was then transferred to a linoleum block and light areas were removed. This created a printing plate that was inked to create the prints of each student portrait. What a unique and wonderful class project. Thanks for sharing!

The time has come for college bound juniors to begin registering for college admissions tests. Colleges will accept either the SAT or ACT test when considering students for admissions - and they have no preference about which test students take. For this reason, students should look at both tests online and decide which test might better reflect their strengths.
SAT test information, free preparation tools, and registration is available at sat.collegeboard.org . ACT test information, free preparation tools, and registration can be found at actstudent.org .
When registering online (the preferred method for these testing companies), students should enter Central York's code: 395430. Students are also STRONGLY encouraged to ensure that they have their scores sent directly to their colleges of choice when registering!
