October 2014

Principal's Message
Diane Grondin and Eileen Czarnecki

Stony Brook bids a fond farewell to Mr. Billet
On Friday, October 3, 2014, Stony Brook students and staff surprised Mr. Billet with a school-wide assembly to say goodbye and wish him luck in his new job.  Mr. Billet will assume the position of Assistant to the Superintendent of CYSD on Monday, October 13, 2014.  We wish him the best of luck in his new role and thank him for his many years of dedication and service to the Stony Brook community.

Check out the short video clip from the assembly http://youtu.be/EF1vkPQ6K-E (courtesy of Mrs. Lehman)

Welcome new Principal, Diane Grondin

I am excited to be part of the Stony Brook family. I have been an assistant principal over the past five years at Roundtown Elementary, and for the past year at Sinking Springs Elementary. I grew up in northern Pennsylvania near Williamsport as an only child. I attended Bloomsburg University for Special Education, and moved to York County upon graduation with a learning support job in the Dover School District. I taught in the Dover School District for over twenty years in a learning support classroom for grades 3-6 and as an Intervention Specialist.

I have two daughters, Brianna and Bethany. Brianna is a sophomore at West Chester University with a dual major in special education and elementary education. Bethany is a junior at West York and runs cross-country and track.. My husband, Bill, works in the dental field in sales and marketing. Our latest addition to our family is a 4-month-old King Cavalier Spaniel named Winston.

In my spare time, I love to read, run, make anything with my Cricut and of course, coat anything possible in chocolate. Our family loves to vacation at Topsail Island, North Carolina as well as the central coast of California where my husband's twin and four other siblings live. We are looking forward to spending most of our Christmas vacation in California with his family.

I am very excited about becoming part of the Stony Brook family and getting to know more about you and your families.

Stony Brook Helpful Tips and Reminders

Volunteering at Stony Brook
If you are a current volunteer at Stony Brook, just a gentle reminder to remember bring and wear your District issued volunteer badge.  In addition to this badge, you will also be asked to sign-in at the front office.

If you are interested in volunteering in our school but do not have the necessary clearances, volunteer forms are available in the front office.

Absences, Educational Trips, and Blue Cards
When your child is absent, please call the Stony Brook Absentee Line (717) 846-6789 ext. 2406 to report your child's absence.  Please also remember to send back a blue excuse card when your child returns to school.

If you are planning an educational trip, please remember to fill out an educational trip form 2 weeks prior to your departure for principal approval.  Once the trip is approved, please remember to complete the blue excuse cards before you leave.  You do not need to contact the absentee line to report the absence.

Please refer to the CYSD Policy No. 204 here for further details and information on attendance regulations.

Dismissal
If you need to communicate a temporary change in how your child is going home, please send in a written note with your child so that the teacher and the main office are aware of this change before dismissal time.  It will be helpful to us and your child if any changes are communicated before 3:00 PM to minimize confusion and any miscommunication during dismissal time at the end of the day.  Thank you for your help in ensuring this change is communicated in a timely manner.

Panther Pantry

Panther Pantry open third Tuesday of each month!

The Panther Pantry, Central York School District's food pantry, will open it's doors to the public on Tuesday, October 21, 2014.

What? The Panther Pantry is where a family can have access to nutritious foods and household items.

Who? Children who live in our district and their families may come and receive supplemental food and household supplies. (Children do not need to be present in order to receive items.)

How? Drive up to the front of the high school. At the entrance to the school, you will be greeted by a staff member and given a bag filled with nourishing food, cleaning supplies & other household items. There is no formal documentation needed to receive help and the visit will be kept confidential.

When? The third Tuesday of each month from 6-7 pm.

Why? It is the mission of The Panther Pantry to support our learners and their families. Proper nutrition is needed in order to thrive.

What's The Catch? There is no catch. Simply come to the high school.

How can I show my appreciation? Become a school volunteer. There are many volunteer opportunities in our district (i.e.: classroom helpers, concession stand help) in all buildings. Volunteer clearance forms will be available along with assistance completing them. The money that it costs to get clearances is reimbursed by the district.

In order to ensure the safety and security of all our students, please communicate with your child's teacher or the school office, should you need to change how your child will get home from school.  You may send in a note with your child, email your child's teacher, or call the main office to communicate these changes.

Panther Pantry Donations
How can I help make a donation?
Our schools are having a monthly food drive so that we can stock the shelves of our Panther Pantry! Your donations are appreciated and will help Central York children and their families. Donate items the week of October 13th. Send donations to school with your child knowing that all the donations received will go to our Central families.

What can I donate now? Stony Brook is now taking donations of nuts, granola, and trail mix for the Panther Pantry.

Counselor's Corner
Cecile Frey

Each marking period, our students will be working on a new character trait from R.O.A.R.  During the first marking period, we will be concentrating on ways that we can show respect.  The guidance curriculum lesson for October in each grade will focus on conflict resolution skills.  We will use "Stop, Think, Go make a good choice" using different strategies.

We will be working hard to be "bucket fillers" instead of "bucket dippers."  Students will hear the story, Have You Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud.  It tells the story of how everyone, all around the world, carries an invisible bucket with him/her that holds our good thoughts and feelings.  When our buckets are full, we feel happy and when our buckets are empty, we feel sad.  This book encourages everyone to fill others' buckets by being kind and respectful rather than dipping from others' buckets by saying and doing unkind actions.  Please feel free to encourage your child by saying, " Have you filled a bucket today?" or by brainstorming different ways your child can be kind and respectful to others.  If you would like to learn more about bucket filling, visit the Bucket Fillers website www.bucketfillers101.comPlease remember to fill your own bucket too!

Please watch for flyers to come home about Parenting Workshops offered this fall.

Feel free to contact me at ext. 2108 if you have any questions, concerns, or you would like to set up an appointment to meet with me concerning your child(ren).

Enjoy the fall weather!

Counselor Tip of the Month
Try to catch or notice your child(ren) behaving well or doing good deeds.  It is important to focus on the positive behavior, for example,  "I noticed that you were helping your sister with her homework" or "I see that you cleaned your room."  When you mention what he/she has done, your child(ren) will likely repeat the positive behavior.
