CIRCAC scholarship honors dynamic first president
This spring, CIRCAC initiated its first scholarship program to support Cook Inlet students pursuing careers in either environmental or maritime studies. One of those scholarships is named after CIRCAC's first president, the late James Carter Sr., not only to recognize his commitment and tenure with the organization, but because of his belief in and passion for learning. According to his widow, Sue Carter, nothing was more important to Jim than education.

Drills and exercises
Two significant day-long oil spill drills at the CISPRI facility in May and June with Tesoro Alaska and Hilcorp Alaska LLC, gave CIRCAC the opportunity to test the effectiveness of its resources and internal and constituent  communications. When a Unified Command is activated for an oil spill response, CIRCAC staff participates within the Incident Command System (ICS) as a conduit for stakeholders to bring forth concerns, deliver information, or share local knowledge about the region. We also utilize Cook Inlet RCAC projects that can add valuable assistance to the response, such as the Cook Inlet Response Tool.

The Tesoro Vessel Plan exercise also afforded PROPS Public Member Jan Hansen the opportunity to observe response activities, staff meetings and ICS section briefings.

In the field
This month, CIRCAC's Science Director is conducting intertidal and subtidal field sampling for Kamishak Bay, with partners NOAA, BOEM, NPS and UAF. This sampling follows up on work done in the 1970s and includes historical data, developing a habitat model, conducting reconnaissance and field surveys. The data will be accessible through the Alaska Ocean Observing System (AOOS) data portals, including the Cook Inlet Response Tool (CIRT). Try out the CIRT by clicking on the above image.
