MHPD Stats

Morgan Hill experienced a downward trend in Part 1 Property Crimes for the first half of the year.  Crime is down overall nationwide, but our downward trend can be attributed in part to the Department's pro-active community policing efforts and use of some of the latest tools in technology for law enforcement.  Learn more about how MHPD uses technology to help fight crime in the Chief's Corner.

It's summer time in Morgan Hill and fun activities are in full swing through out our community.  Summer time is also one of the busiest times for the Police Department.  Our officers and staff are not only performing their usual duties, but are working hard ensure the special events that occur during summer such as the July 4th Parade, graduations and other special events are safe for everyone.  On Tuesday August 7, the Department will host National Night Out.  This is an opportunity to meet your MHPD officers and staff as well as enjoy music, activities and an old fashioned ice cream social.  More information on this event is provided in the newsletter.  I hope you will join us Downtown on 3rd Street on August 7th.

I am pleased to announce our 2011 Annual Report is now available to view.  The Annual Report provides a snapshot of annual trends in crime and traffic as well as  information regarding the community and the Police Department. We hope you find this information helpful and useful. Click here to view report.

Since becoming Chief, I have made technology a priority for the Department.  We have made significant strides in obtaining and launching several high tech tools to fight crime.  The Community Law Enforcement Foundation (CLEF) has been instrumental in raising funds to provide this equipment which we would otherwise not be able to afford through our Department's operating budget.  These include a License Plate Reader (LPR) and NOPTIC thermal imaging camera.
National Night Out 2012

On Tuesday, August 7, 2012 people all over the United States will observe the "29th Annual National Night Out." This program was created by the National Association of Town Watch to make a statement against crime throughout the country.

The City of Morgan Hill's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a trained team of volunteers who know what to do following a large scale disaster and are ready to assist our community on a moment's notice. CERT members are everyday Morgan Hill citizens who have full time jobs, are parents, students, retired, and all have the same goal of minimizing the loss of lives following a natural or manmade disaster.

CERT training is free to our residents and is offered several times a year. Classroom time is energetic and includes hands on opportunities in disaster medical operations, extinguishing small fires, simple techniques to lift heavy objects with the most basic tools. Other modules introduce students to disaster psychology and terrorism. CERT graduates are invited to become Disaster Service Workers for the City.

Rise in Residential Burglaries

There has recent uptick in then number of residential burglaries in Morgan Hill.  A few simple precautions can help you avoid becoming a crime victim and make your home less attractive to burglars.

  • Be sure your outdoor lighting illuminates all entrances to your home
  • Cut back shrubbery to discourage burglars from hiding near window and doors.
  • Keep windows and doors locked at all times. Make certain your garage door is closed and locked.
  • Install a peephole in your front door.
  • If you're not home during the day, have packages delivered to a trusted neighbor or other location such as work
  • Keep windows and sliding glass doors secured with auxiliary locks. Special door pins, available at home improvement stores, can prevent your sliding doors from being lifted from their tracks during a burglary attempt.
  • Deadbolt locks should be used on all exterior doors (single or double cylinder with a minimum one inch throw is recommended).
  • Never hide or store keys or tools outside.
  • Don't hesitate to report suspicious activity in your neighborhood.

By working together we can keep Morgan Hill Safe.
