Water Testing Results

Water Testing After the health crisis reported in the Newark Public Schools where an excessive amount of lead was found to be contaminating drinking water, the administration of the Wayne Township Public Schools determined that a water test was warranted as part of our obligation to protect the health of students, employees, parents and all visitors to our facilities.

The district contracted with a testing company, and in partnership with the Wayne Health and Water Departments, designed a process for testing based on standard professional practices. The district completed tests in 20 buildings and took 58 samples. The results were reported back to the administration on April 19th. After the testing results were evaluated by employees of the Health Department on April 20th, it was determined that the drinking water at all of our elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and all of our facilities was healthy with testing results showing that lead levels were far below EPA action levels. Keep in mind that due to construction practices and materials, trace amounts of lead can be found in almost all drinking water. Additional testing for the Preakness School is required due to water main repairs at the time of testing.

Although water testing is not required in New Jersey Public Schools, the district will continue to work with the municipality to test our water periodically and ensure healthy drinking water in our schools.

Residency Verification Process Commences

Verified In an effort to confirm that students attending the Wayne Township Public Schools are actually residing in the community, the school district will proceed with a plan to verify residency at all grade levels. In order to achieve this goal, many school districts undergo a full re-registration process which is often problematic, inefficient, and inconvenient for the vast majority of parents. In Wayne, our plan involves a hybrid model that takes advantage of modern technology combined with a streamlined traditional re-registration process.

Parents of students at transitional grades (fifth grade going into sixth grade and eighth grade going into ninth grade) will be required to re-register their children in the coming months at your current school. For example, if you have a child currently in eighth grade at George Washington Middle School, you should report to George Washington Middle School to re-register your child. This process has been streamlined, and it is not a full re-registration but rather a document review that should take approximately five minutes.

Parents of students at all other grade levels will not need to take any other action because a computerized search of public records will be conducted against our school records in order to verify residency. If a residency problem is identified, the administration will address each situation on a case-by-case basis.

A reminder to all parents that we are dependent on the information you provide to us. Please be sure to update all of your contact information. In the event of an emergency, it is imperative for health and safety reasons that we have updated and accurate contact information for all of our parents.

Please be on the lookout for additional specific information from your child's school.
