Automotive Technology Program
District Automotive Technology Instructors, Steve Hopper and Ken Bergen, recently attended Hunter Engineering Corporation's new product demonstration and training session at the company's Orangeburg, NY training center. They participated in sessions highlighting wheel alignment, wheel balancing, tire changing, and brake equipment. Hunter's equipment is used by students in the district's auto program, in particular, by those students enrolled in the Steering, Suspension and Brakes classes.
The program's wheel alignment equipment is being updated this year which students will use either at post-secondary training schools, or at employers participating in the work-study program. These updates are being funded completely by utilizing part of the Perkins Grant funds that the auto program qualifies for.
The auto program is also in the process of attaining certification in the ASE/NATEF's new Maintenance and Light Repair category. Skills the students gain in this curriculum align well with those they will need to be successful as entry-level employees in the automotive industry. The program previously had certified in other areas individually, such as Engine Performance, Electrical, Steering, Suspension, and Brakes. This new certification brings all of those together and additionally teaches students other necessary skills such as vehicle identification number decoding, repair order writing, parts ordering, and customer service interaction.
The district's Automotive Technology Program has been one of only a few comprehensive high school auto programs in the state to have attained national certification. This has proven to be a huge advantage to students participating in the program, as many have gone on to successful careers in the automotive industry on all levels, including ownership of automotive and automotive-related businesses in the area.
