ELEMENTARY GATES PROGRAM
GATES Language Arts is More than Words
In class, the GATES Language Arts students put on their thinking caps to make connections and identify relationships between word pairs and groups. They have also been busy studying new vocabulary words to prepare for their first gold level WordMasters analogy contest in December. They are excited to be competing nationally as they work to solve complex word analogies by thinking critically and analyzing challenging word pairs.
In addition our students are learning more about themselves as readers. They are completing a survey to identify their favorite authors, preferred genres, and more. This information will be a springboard to our future project where they analyze how literature creates change. As part of this project, they will write letters to an author of their choice, sharing how the author's work has changed their perspective on life.
GATES Math is Not Just Numbers
In GATES Math, we focus on complex problem solving, critical thinking skills, decision making in real word scenarios, and the 8 mathematical practices. Each week, students are exposed to a variety of rigorous math problems. Using diverse strategies and reasoning skills, they are challenged to persevere and communicate their thinking. They will develop their problem solving perseverance throughout the year and will compete in Math League as a culminating activity in the spring.
Writing Contest Update
More than 150 students submitted a myth for Scholastic's Rick Riordan Myth Writing Contest after the GATES Teachers visited 4th and 5th grade classes. The students were introduced to the elements of myths, learning that they answer a question and often have a supernatural or magical solution. We are waiting to see if we will have one chosen as a winner. We are looking forward to offering more school wide projects, similar to this one, during the course of the year. Students and parents will soon be able to visit the new Wayne Schools' Elementary Enrichment Website to explore enrichment opportunities throughout the year. Watch for math, language arts, and STEM activities to challenge students to exercise their minds. To learn more about the GATES program click here.
