Full Day Kindergarten

Dear Residents:

On November 3rd, registered voters will have the opportunity to vote on a special question that could lead to the establishment of a full-day kindergarten program in the Wayne Township Public Schools for all eligible students. With the exception of the three full-day transitional kindergarten classes that currently exist in the district for the purpose of providing targeted assistance to students, the district does not have full-day kindergarten.

The full-day kindergarten special question is included as part of the general election ballot. The total additional funding needed for the full-day kindergarten expansion is $2,114,250. The cost of staffing full-day kindergarten is $1,875,818 and this would include 19.5 teachers, 5 instructional aides, daily increases in hours for playground and cafeteria aides, additional substitute costs, benefits, and professional development. These staffing costs are recurring operating costs and would lead to a permanent increase in the district's tax levy.

An additional $238,432 is required for set up costs such as classroom supplies and technology and initial training for teachers. Set up costs are non-recurring "one time" costs and will not lead to a permanent increase in taxes.
