Black Bear Sightings in Wayne

Black Bear The loss of natural habitat and easy to find food makes black bear sightings routine in northern New Jersey. Residents may observe black bears using backyards as part of their natural travel corridors as they pass through neighborhoods. The sight of a black bear is unsetlling for all residents given the potential danger. We want to assure all residents that the district will be working closely with the police department to insure the safety of our students. We will continue to follow a "better safe than sorry" approach when dealing with bear sightings and making decisions about keeping students out of harm's way.

Residents can assist with the bear problem by helping to cut off their food supply. According to the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife it is important not to leave out any food or garbage that may encourage bears to linger in residential areas. Once they find an easily accessible food source, they will lose their wariness of people and may return to the food source. These bears can become a nuisance or aggressive.

If you are a pet owner, clean up after your pet. Do not feed pets outdoors. Walk dogs on a leash and keep them indoors at night. Avoid feeding birds, but if you choose to do so, clean up spilled seeds and shells daily. Consider starting a Neighborhood Watch to keep residents alerted to bears in the area. Remember: Never feed bears! It is illegal in New Jersey and it's dangerous.

For further information, visit the Division of Fish and Wildlife website: http://www.njfishandwildlife.com/bearfacts.htm. Black bear sightings should be reported to the Wayne Police Department at 973-694-0600 or the state DFW at 908-735-8793.
