Superintendent's Welcome Message to Parents

Dr Toback Another school year is here, and I can assure you that the employees of the Wayne Township Public Schools are looking forward to welcoming our students back on September 3rd. We are also excited about the opportunity to meet our parents during our always popular back to school nights. We have much to share, and I would like to take this opportunity to update you on news and events from around the school district.

Technology continues to shape education at all levels. We are happy to report that the district took a major step forward this summer to enhance the ability of our students and teachers to use technology in the classroom. The first thing required in order to effectively use technology is a reliable network that can handle the demands of thousands of active learners. Major improvements were made to the network and hundreds of additional devices were purchased to allow for increased access. Many older computers were replaced and the district also invested in a number of tablets.

In addition to enhancing our network, the district took another step forward by modernizing nine elementary classrooms (one at each school) to create 21st century learning spaces. These new classrooms are flexible workspaces that allow teachers and students to work together collaboratively in pursuit of their learning objectives.

K-6 students, teachers, and parents can expect excellent new resources for this school year. All K-6 students will be receiving new enVision MATH books as well as a host of accompanying resources. As parents, you will enjoy the online support that will help you to help your children with their homework and connect you more directly with the math lessons being taught in school. The district will schedule a number of parent workshops to familiarize you with the many benefits and resources available with enVision MATH.

At the end of last school year, the district introduced a new app that can be downloaded on smartphones and other mobile devices. The app is an additional means for residents to receive district news and information. Anyone is able to download the app by going to the Google Play Store for Android users or the App Store for residents using Apple products. Simply search for "Wayne Township Public Schools."

Facility work is a fairly common summer activity in most school districts. What differentiates this summer from others is the volume of work that was completed at our schools. Large scale roofing projects, classroom renovations, installation of new public address (PA) systems in two schools, furniture replacement, parking lot resurfacing, concrete work, flooring projects, painting ... the list goes on and on. The point is that the school buildings are in good repair and ready for the return of students.

Recently, the district received some great news. We are happy to report that Wayne Hills High School was recently identified by Newsweek as one of the top 500 high schools in the United States (#259). Both high schools were recently identified by the Washington Post as two of America's most rigorous high schools. This recognition continues a long tradition of academic accolades for both high schools.

In closing, we recognize that pick-up and drop-off can be very hectic, especially on the first day of school. We can all agree that saving a few minutes of travel time is not worth an accident, injury, or tragedy. Please be patient and careful at pick-up and drop-off.

Welcome back to school! We are looking forward to a great year.
